I don’t use N360 either, but I think that the Product Key is valid only for the version it was issued for.
I also would suggest that you contact the Norton Online Support and check the matter with them.
To contact customer support click on this link https://www.norton.com/chat . This should put you in touch with your local support if you are outside the USA.
I have had a live chat with Norton who advise that it is a simple matter to install the multi-device software on top of the current regular N360 which I have. I am to do a live chat if I require their assistance in doing the install.
Norton provide the facilities for a "RICH TEXT" format. Maybe someone would like to submit a suggestion to have a just "TEXT" Norton Community ? Always ready to oblige. AK
My subscription to Norton 360 3PC expires shortly (couple of weeks time). I was about to renew online when I saw the excessive price Symantec were quoting (nearly £70). I am not on auto-renewal. I'm now looking at possible cheaper alternatives, but staying with Norton.
I curently have Norton 360 because it came with the package when I got my laptop. Actually, Norton Internet Security 3PC would be sufficient, and I think I can still buy the 2014 version 'out of the box' from Smiths at £24.99. Presumably I would need to uninstall 360 before installing NIS - I see there is an 'uninstall' program in the Norton folder - do I just use this, or use it before/after invoking the Windows 'remove' function?
Another alternative would appear to be to download/get a box for the 360 Multi-device product. It seems unclear whether Norton are still offering downloads for the 3 device version (to new customers) at £29.99 or not. I certainly don't need the extra facilities, and I wouldn't be entirely happy about the unnecessary complexity.
Or does anyone know where you can get a boxed version of the non-multi 3PC 360 product at a decent price? Then (I think) all I'd have to do would be enter the new key into my existing product?
Free delivery .... or you can use their download service which is authorized by Norton and comes from Norton servers not some third party.
If you stick with Norton 360 then you can use the Amazon download service (£34) for N360 and not download but just use the KEY you get from them to extend the licence of your installed N360.
Both NIS and N360 have the same antivirus protection systems and the Identity Safe but N 360 adds a bit of online storage and some utilities which some find useful and some avoid as causing problems .... and for which there are free third party alternatives. So for a bit of work uninstalling and reinstalling NIS I'd save the money .....
PS Put me out of my misery please -- what is "frustration free packaging" that I see referred to from time to time in UK adverts?
Thanks for the feedback. I've decided to move from N360 to NIS, and have purchased a boxed NIS 3 PC V21 (W H Smith £24.99).
I'm assuming I need to uninstall N360 before installing NIS. A few queries regarding uninstalling N360 -
1 I run a Windows 7 system. My understanding (from a support/norton/com website) is that I should be able to effect the uninstall via the Windows Control Panel - this presumably runs the Uninstall Norton 360 program in the Norton 360 folder? Am I right to take it that no further uninstall program has to be downloaded and run? (I vaguely remember reading somewhere that having gone the Control Panel route and restarted, it was then necessary to download and run some other uninstall program to effect a clean uninstall)?
2 Presumably N360 should be 'stopped' prior to uninstall - where's the 'off' switch?
3 Can this uninstall procedure be run offline? (I don't use N360 Backup or Identity Safe).
4 Will uninstalling delete my Norton Account (N360 is my only Norton product).? (Ah - so presumably need to run online so account can be updated/ N360 entry removed?)
As regards installing the NIS product, the leaflet with the CD recommends installing by going to www.norton.com/setup, entering the product key, and following the instructions from there. Sounds simple (!) - anything particular I should be aware of?
Do item 5 before item 1 if you are nervous about security/protection.
1 -- Although much of the two are similar it would be prudent to run the Norton Removal Tool at https://www.norton.com/nrt and then reboot your computer before installing Norton Internet Security. Some say do Windows Uninstall first; some say don't bother .....
2 -- Don't bother about trying to stop N 360.
3/4 -- You can try running the uninstall and clean up offline if you want to but if you don't use your computer for online work while doing the change over I don't see you getting infected. Some say that the Norton database does get updated when you uninstall but I'm not at all sure about that. In any case afterwards you can update your Account in Norton Management. The actual Norton Acount will not be deleted and you can log in with your email ID and your password.
5 -- Assuming that W H Smith is not one of the suppliers that has a special activation arrangement with Norton (Does your box have a card or a sticker on the disk sleeve with the activation code on it?) you would do best not to use the disk to install with but to download Norton Internet Security at: http://norton.com/latestnis to a place on your computer where you can find it again since this is the most uptodate downloadable version whereas what is on the disk is the original release from last year and will need a lot more updating, plus some of the updates will be fixing what needed fixing on the release and I think it's better to go direct to the latest version.
You can do that download before you remove Norton 360 just for safety.
After you download the Norton Internet Security file -- NIS-ESDND-21.2.0.38-EN.exe -- to a place where you can find it you can double click on it to run and install it but you will need to be on line to do this.
It will start off as a free trial installation during which you can activate it using the KEY that came with your purchased boxed version. On the main screen of NIS click where it says the number of days remaining and either Subscribe or Renew and you should get a screen come up which after a short delay will say If you have a key click here and you will get a box to enter the KEY in.
After you have done that, if it doesn't take you to your Norton Account you can go there and see what shows. If it shows the Norton 360 as still activated you can click on the Dustbin icon and that will deactivate it.
If the NIS shows up OK you can give it a user friendly name by clicking on the Pencil icon and naming that specific installation.
Regarding your comment under #5, the product key sticker is on the back of the 'Getting Started' leaflet included in the box with the CD. The leaflet gives two ways of installing: (1) 'Installing from the website (recommended)'; and (2) 'CD installation'.The website for (1) is given as www.norton.com/setup. This site prompts for the product key prior to download, although whether it would go to an up to date version or not I don't know.
I don't know what sort of special activation arrangements retailers might have, but does this sound like one? Provided it doesn't, I'll follow your 'trial version' download route.
I would use that latestnis link I gave earlier which downloads a single installation file NIS-ESDND-21.2.0.38-EN.exe -- about 150MB I think -- which you can save and then run after removing N360 without worrying about the installation getting corrupted by internet problems.
If you should have a problem with the KEY -- how many characters are there in it? 5 x 5 char groups is normal -- then I doubt there will be any problem in having WH Smith or Norton CHAT in the UK resolving it for you.
Don't forget the multiple runs of LiveUpdate to make sure you are fully uptodate.
