No other security software is installed. I like to keep my install clean: just what i need.
Could there be some kind of conflict with Vista? Not only am i trying to solve this system-freeze during AV scan, i also am trying to deal with Vista’s inability to deal with USB hubs, external drives and the like.
In what folder is that file?
Any ideas why my system freezes during AV scans? I thought that perhaps the program that connects my computer to the office VPN might be the problem, so it has been removed (which obviously adds another problem...no remote access). Still no joy.
Any/all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Hi,
It appears you will have to manually remove the "SecurityRisk.URLRedir" problem. Try following these steps then let us know if it solved your issue.
Sorry,
hi pb23r - this feels like it is related to a particular file type or perhaps a drive periphial (to Stu's point). does the activity log provide any insight or have you ever seen what files it is scanning when it fails?
mel
I will give this a try this evening and get to you with the results.
Many thanks...!!!

Dave...i followed the link (per your post, 6th from the top), here is the contents of my "hosts" file:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.zzz.zzz rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.zzz.zzz x.acme.com # x client host
XXX.X.X.1 localhost <---- is this a problem?
::1 localhost
Does anything here look like the source of my troubles?
p
ps. i have replaced the digits with "X" since this is a public forum.
If the localhost is 127.0.0.1 then the rest looks fine.
Host FIles maps hostnames to IP addresses: 127.0.0.1 is the default IP for your computer.
Hostfiles override the DNS.
An example of how it can be used for good:
Hostfiles are a way to block sites. If your computer has been hacked and a window keeps popping up taking you to some malicious site like reallybadmaliciousads.com, then you can use the hostfile to direct any traffic to reallybadmaliciousads.com back to yourself 127.0.0.1, so all that would happen is you’d see a blank window.
For that, you’d see an additional line in the hostfile like:
127.0.0.1 reallybadmaliciousads.com
But as you could imagine, it can also be used for bad.
For example: Some malicious malware could change the hostfile so every time you went to symantec.com, you’d be redirected to reallybadmaliciousads.com
Luckily, your hostfile looks short and simple and clean.
Hi Dave...thanks for the speedy response!
So i know that my computer hasnt been hacked. But i still cannot complete a scan of my computer...it freezes *every* time. And as i said in my initial post, i cannot log into the office VPN without successfully completing an AV scan. So i still have a problem.
To make things extra interesting, i have discovered that Vista does not cope particularly well with external devices connected by USB hub. So running 360 back-ups is kinda dodgy. But that is a topic for a different forum...
Any additional things i can try? Really wanting to avoid wiping out my system and re-installing.

hi pb23r - if there was no specific file, file type or folder commonality in the scan failures (which i'm not sure we ever established), is there anything in the error log? here's how to find out:
1. within the program, click the Norton Internet Security tab
2. open the Reports and Statistics section
3. click "View Activity Log".
4. at the bottom will be an Error Messages section.
if there is nothing there, have you tried disconnecting external drives and seeing if that has any impact?

Hi pb23r
I too have an XPS M1730, and after several days trying to fix the freezing problem I moved back to Norton 360 v1
Does your computer only freeze while scanning?
Mine froze while viewing Blu-Ray movies, playing games, or just sitting idle with the screen saver (because the scanning processs kicked in while idle)
I tried contacting Tech Support only to have to reformat my computer after all the registry "cleaning" and permission "fixing" they did.
Hi Draiken…i did as MelodicWInd suggested and checked the error log. I noticed that there were lots of entries associated with my Broadcom 57XX card. So i downloaded the latest from the Dell support site, removed the old driver and installed the new. I can now successfully complete a scan 85% of the time and the computer doesnt seem to freeze anymore. When it does freeze, it is always at the exact same place. It still won’t locate an external hard-drive connected by USB hub. But that is an issue for another forum!
I haven't tried, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to reformat the rig if I use N360 v2.0 again... too much hassle, I'm gona give it another try on my work computer to see how it works, then maybe in a few weeks will try on my M1730
Thanks for the info tho...
Draiken…i am going to flatten my system this weekend. Between N360 v2.0 and the horror-show that is Vista, my m1730 is barely operational. Funny…my iMac doesn’t have these problems.
I am having exactly the same problem. It freezes when it reaches "securityrisk URLredir".I have 12 guys from technical team try to do remote repairs but they all keep doing the same thing but have been unable to resolve the issues.
It is able to run the scan fisrt time Norton 360 was installed but after running update it keeps freezing. We have even changed setting in the windoes Services file as well.I am running Vista Ultimate on Toshiba Qosmio Q32HD version.Any ideas for resolving the problem
Probably not the best answer in a Symantec forum…i removed N360 and use AVG 8.0. Fully functional, no system freeze. Back-ups are handled by Ghost. System Clean-up and Defrag using Vista’s system tools.
I have been a Norton user since the DOS days, still have N360 on my Dell desktop with an identical OS set-up. This has been puzzling to say the least.
It appears that you’ve already reported this issue to another thread. Please refrain from posting the same issue to multiple threads. Thanks!
Sorry Tony…my bad!

I'm having exactly the same preoblem as the original poster - system freezes during a scan but also when system has been idle for some time. This has only started happening since I installed 360 v.2.
This a copy of my hosts file:

Does the problem have something to do with Spybot?
