Norton 360 Upgrade Backup Error

Backup error message "There is a backup problem.  Make sure the destination drive or device is connected and then try again."  Device is external Seagate hard drive. Computer recognizes the device and showing it under my computer.  237GB free of 465 on harddrive.  Back up has worked many times in past.  Running Windows 7 home premium on Sony laptop.  Restarted everything.  Suggestions.

To delete I chose the backup set and clicked "Delete backup set". Yes, it appears that the new set ran properly. I am backing up online and the new set is about 50 mb.

When I upgraded to Norton 360 Premier v6 from v5 an error showed up with the backup that said: "Norton 360 removed incompatible rules from a Backup Set created with a previous version of the software". There was a button that said "Fix Now" so I clicked that. It tried fixing it but then said "Fix not complete" and just showed the error without any button. Since I had just played around with the backup and didn't really need it at the time I just disabled the backup. Now I am wanting to use it again and so I enabled the backup. It still shows that error and always shows a warning about it. How can I get rid of that warning? I tried creating a new Backup Set and deleting the old one but that still didn't fix it. Thanks for any advice.

Hi dpgttr.

When you select "delete backup set" from the options manage backups it removes the set from those it is currently worrying about but it leaves the actual records where they were stored.  With an error like yours I would have aimed to go in and delete the actual set from the storage site.  However I have never used the Norton Online system so I do not know just how that works.  Maybe someone else reading this has experience with the online backup and can advise....

If not you might like to try looking at your actual backup set and see if you can identify the two different sets.  One for the old troublesome set and one for the new.  If you can find the old one I would recommend that you physically delete the record and then see if your problem is resolved.

I had the Norton Backup Drive enabled so that showed me the items that were saved online. I deleted all the items besides the new one I had created.

Hello again dpgttr.

I am fairly stuck on this one as I have never used the online backup.  Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along.  If not, I have two suggestions.

The first is that you contact the Norton 24 hr online Chat service via this link and ask if they can clear out your old backup sets.  I say this as I think they have access that you do not have and so may be able to do a more thorough job.

Then if that does not work then my thoughts turn to a removal and reinstall but given the oddity of the message and my lack of knowledge of the online backup I really hope that option 1 works.

Whatever you decide.  Good luck.

Try opening the main Norton 360 client interface and click on Backup. From there go to Manage Backup Sets. Select the backup set you want to remove under the Backup set name pull down. You can then select to delete it from the options on the right. It'll let you remove it as long as you have at least one more backup set already created.

Removing it in this manner removes all sets and associated data pertaining to that set. Just make sure you don't need anything restored from that set before taking this action.

@wwelty That is exactly what I have done. The error remains even though I only have the new backup set left.

We may need to set a time where I can give you a call and work with you directly. It's sounding like it carried over a damaged rule set or a drive selected that shouldn't be. Can you shoot me a private message containing:

  • Your name, phone number and email address associated to your account
  • At least two times I can reach you including timezone
  • A link to this forum post so I have a point of reference.

Thanks

Hi dpgttr,

Just in case you need some addtional info on PM's:

This issue was resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling the product with wwelty's help. I had been hoping to fix it without doing that but now it is resolved.

Thanks,

Welcome,

I'll assume that when you boot up the external drive is connected to the computer and running.

Have you reviewed your backup set to be sure nothing has changed?

As a test you might create a new backup set [just a few files for testing] to see if that works.

If it does then you might consider deleting the existing backup set and creating a new one.

Keep us posted

I had reviewed my backup settings and thought I had changed them. But tonight after reading your response, I went in and changed settings.  Then immediately went back in and reset to the same external drive and same drvie letter as before.  Of course, it worked just as it had always done in past.  Thanks as your response which got me to reset the setting to another drive then go back an reset to origininal drive and got backup done!
