I am running XP Pro with IE 7 and Norton 360 v. 3.0.0.134.
In the firewall settings, I have set up IE to allow and MSFT generic host processing to allow.
But for no reason while browsing, IE would suddenly hang and eventually crash. At that time, IE would be taking up over 90% of resources. The only option is to kill IE. Then ccSvcHst takes up over 90% of CPU resources, and can not be killed. The PC has to be restarted.
SImilar crash also happens with Firefox.
I have all latest fixes and patches from MSFT.
The Event Viewer has the following entry for the crash, though of not much help.
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16827, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.5755, fault address 0x00010a19.
If that can’t help, check what happens if you turn off some parts of 360: Right click on the norton icon on the system tray (by the clock), and turn off Firewall. Check what happens. If everything normal, turn it on again, and see what happens with it when it’s activated. Do the same with Auto-protect. If you get by both deactivated the same results, you can try to disable the Norton IE plugins (like the toolbar), and check the browsers again.
If you open Firefox and type about.crashes in the address bar, you will be taken to the website that provides the details of each crash. This is assuming that you have submitted those details. It may provide some information that is helpful. What version of FF are you running, and what add-ons have you included.
4. Repeat the same for firefox.exe from C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
5. Run LiveUpdate repeatedly until you see the message "No more updates".
Try to use Internet Explorer & Firefox, let us know the results. If the crash happens again, try starting your Firefox in Safe mode (Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox(Safe mode). )
Did you tried to stop any parts (auto-protect, firewall), or the whole 360 product (in the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services list you can stop the whole 360 program) to test the browser behavior?
And were you able to find out which part (toolbar, auto-protect, firewall) causing the problem? That would be a big help for us to find the best solution to your error…
Thanksfor your help. But I do not have that much time, specially after paying $$$ to Symantec every year. If they sell a product that does not work, then they will lose my business and my recommendations. The days when we all used to spend time figuring out Microsoft and Symantec and others' incompetence are long gone. Either the product works out of the box or it does not. If it does not, I - the customer - will go get another one.
