I have tried to install the new SP3 for WinXP pro two times. Turninng off and disabling everything. I believe that Norton 360 is the problem. What should I do to reliably install SP3. I also tried this on my laptop which also has 360. Same results.
Also my knowledgebase searches show that computers with Norrton 360, which do successfully install SP3, end up with many many registry entries that have to be deleted and programs that do not work and directories that are empty. How do I prevent this.
I remain unconvinced that Norton 360 is our long term solution for these reasons. Windows unpdates have been working for years on this machine now. Right now I am very unsure about trying SP3 install again. The machine works and I do NOT want another nightmare. I've been around long enough to know how bad this can get. How could we go to Apple? There must be an easier way.
Your help would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Additionally, the update to Norton 360 v2 is a free update for users with a valid subscription for Norton 360.
No the 360 v1 on WinXP sp2 has SP3 install failures is NOT solved. I clicked on Tony's suggestion for free upgrade.
Any ideas? Thoughts or experience on this SP3 problem ?
You do not say actuallyt what your problem is. Can you be more specific?. What errors are you getting, what issues remain ?
If you removed Norton and then have SP3 install failure, then clearly the problem is not Norton. There are issues with Sp3 install and there are solutions by Microsoft to some. However, I would suggest that it is not possible to help you further if you cannot be more specific. Whilst I'm sure many would and probably could help, you might also consider posting SP3 issue in a forum for Microsoft XP.
Some interesting questions you raise. Personally, I have had XP SP2 with Norton 360 (v1) and have successfully upgraded to SP3 through Windows Update and without issue. However, whilst I accept that there are reports of problems for XP users with Norton's, you should also know that no causal relationship has been established. That is not to say that Norton's is not the problem but simply that it is unproved and there are many users with SP3 upgrade problems who do not have Norton's. Some are redirecting the issue to OEM and chip sets, however no definative results appear.
If you are so convinced, it may be possible to fully remove Norton 360 and clean up, and then upgrade to SP3 and then reinstall Norton 360. I believe you should be able to reinstate the licence but others can confirm this.
As to "How could we go to Apple?", I suppose my plane, air, car or walk
Good luck
