jszabo,

Once backup has been disabled it should no longer be scanning your system and therefore should not be setting the archive bits.   Could you please tell me what version of N360 you're using (go to the Help and Support Menu and select the About Norton 360 link.)

Once I have the version i can try out what you're doing myself and see if i can reproduce the issue.

Hi Adam,

I have version 2.3.0.9.

Again this morning, after my PC booted up, I checked the Archive bits on my Word, Excel, Access, etc. files and all of them had their Archive bits set. I had manually cleared them (again) last evening.

In Norton 360, the Backup section is disabled (grey) ... it has been for a couple of days now.

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,

I looked into the code and i think there is one potential scenario where this could still happen (and i'm logging a bug to make sure this is fixed in N360 v3.0 or sooner as we speak.)  When you disable backup it does not disable the backup status indicators, as a result they are loading a backup set which could be causing scans to happen in some circumstances.  When we scan, we set the archive bit as necessary (side note: we won't be using the archive bit at all in N360 v3.0.)

Since you have backup disabled and don't need the backup status indicators or any of the overhead of having the indicators loaded into windows explorer i'm going to give you the command to actually unregister it from windows explorer.

To remove the backup status indicators:

  1. Start->Run
  2. Type "cmd" hit enter
  3. Type "cd \Program Files\Norton 360" (or wherever your N360 install dir is)
  4. Type "regsvr32 /u buShell.dll"
  5. Reboot

This should completely remove the backup status indicators.  If you ever start using N360 backup again and you want to turn the status indicators back on just follow the same steps and replace the command in step 4 with "regsvr32 buShell.dll" (just remove the /u flag).

Let me know if this works for you,

Regards,

Adam

Hi Adam,

Is there perhaps a DLL name I could try other than "buShell.dll"? When I tried to run the command you suggested, I got the message "LoadLibrary("buShell.dll") failed. The specified module could not be found."

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Adam,

Please disregard my previous post. I found buShell.dll in another directory (:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Backup). (Yesterday was a looong day ...)

I'll let you know how this goes. So far so good ...

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Adam,

I successfully unregistered the DLL yesterday. Unfortunately, this morning my data files' Archive bits were still set after I booted up. Again this triggered my backup program to try to back up everything instead of just the modified files ...

Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Joe

Oops!  First, I apologize for sending you the wrong location for the DLL.

From my looking at the code, if you unregistered the DLL and rebooted then I can only think of two scenarios where this could be happening:

1.) N360 Backup would be setting the archive bits is if you actually opened the Backup Configuration page (which triggers a scan to occur).  I'm assuming that because you're not doing this since you aren't

2.) If when you disabled backup the backup schedule did not disable correctly.  In this case backup would be disabled but may potentially try to run according to the schedule it once had.  If this schedule is "Automatic" then it will try to run at 4 hour intervals when your machine goes idle.  I think there is a fix that you cando to solve this:

  1. Re-Enable backup
  2. Open the backup configuration page
  3. change the schedule to "Manual"
  4. save backup settings
  5. Disable Backup

scenario 1 is probably not the issue.  Scenario 2 seems much more likely.  Try the fix and let me know how it fares.  If that does not fix things for you then i will contact you privately and we will set up a livemeeting to check out what is going on and determine how the archive bits are getting set.

Adam

Hi Adam,

>> wrong location for the DLL <<

No prob. If I hadn't been so busy, I would have remembered to search for it.

>> if you actually opened the Backup Configuration page (which triggers a scan to occur) <<

Well, I *did* do this right after I installed 360, attempting to disable the backups. I tried clearing all the checkboxes and saving the configuration. (This happened before you showed me the "correct" disable method.)

>> If this schedule is "Automatic" <<

At the same time, I set backups to "Manual," planning to *never* run them. Just now I checked the configuration page ... they're still set to "Manual."

As far as I recall, I attempted to stop the backups in the order mentioned here: 1) cleared checkboxes, 2) saved the configuration, and 3) set the schedule to "Manual." (I may have saved the configuration again at that point.) A day or so later I posted my initial question here and followed your instructions to disable backups from the main configuration page.

I will again clear the Archive bits before going to work this morning.

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Brian,

The Archive bits are still being set. Can we set up the live meeting you mentioned?

Thanks,

Joe
