Well, that chat thing was really completely useless. My problem was bumped up through 3 different techs and I had to re-explain the problem each time a new one signed on. In the meantime I resolved the problem on my own by doing a system restore and then destroying any bit of Norton software that was on my system. Thank goodness my HP laptop had that system rescue option!
I have since installed avg free and am very happy. I only lose out on about 30 days of prepaid updates, etc. from Norton. But, the software has gotten to the point that it is not viable for windows vista, in my opinion. I have worked off and on as a computer repair/network admin person and this is the worst case of a software hijacking a system that I have ever seen!
I don't think any of us would deny that you have had a very nasty experience (at least I'm glad it happened on a laptop whose manufacturer not only installs a very good recovery system but one that allows you to make external media and will sell you a recovery media, delivered, for $16 !).
But I would add that I've been using N360 v1 and did upgrade to V2 on a VISTA ULTIMATE 32-bit system and the only problem I had was with the right mouse click causing my file manager to close down. This turned out to be due to something in the third party file manager and while they were working on a fix Norton Staffers here worked out a workaround that effectively dealt with the situation.
So I'm sorry at your experience and would add that with your timing you have successfully avoided the major problem that AVG 8 caused that resulted in people having to back-track to 7.5 to continue using it. Zone Alarm had a similar situation when they brought out their ZA Suite with all the bells and whistles. It does happen, alas.
I understand your solution but I'm just sorry that you did not have the time to resolve it here in these Forums where support is terrific.
Today I made the mistake of upgrading to Norton 360 v2. The older version worked fine.
My system has windows vista with the latest service pack.
Now my system will NOT:
Shut down correctly
allow me to uninstall any programs - including Norton 360
run any browser - I am doing this on another computer
edit the registry
run msconfig
run mrt
run nrt
start the system in safe mode
Nothing is working.
How do I manually delete/stop this program. Windows explorer will not let me delete any of the files or change the access rights to them.
Needless, to say, once I get this off my system I am never installing norton again. This is after I have used Norton since the beginning on most of my computers.
Since this sounds like an urgent issue, I would recommend contacting our Customer Support team immediately by visiting the below site:

You can setup a chat session with a Support Technician, and he/she can walk you through the process of fixing the issue. You may also wish to run the Chat tool through Norton 360 Help & Support, if you’re able to do so. That way, the technician can connect directly to your system and troubleshoot the problem directly. Thanks!
