Sure - I am operation VISTA Service Pack 1. The drives in question are both USB Driven Western Digital 500 GB. All my drives are formattd as NTSF.
As metioned, with the configuration I have, in 360 ver 1 it worked. The message that pops up in ver. 2 is an "Intended" message from the Symantec crew saying you cannot backup from a external drive. I read at some other forum a response from Symantec that - yes this was no longer a supported function - ???? Is this the Peter Priciple at work??? :)
Thanks for any insights. Also, what are recommendations for iany nexpensive yet reliable backup software products that I might need to purchase instead?
Thanks,
Daryl
You may well be correct. It seems possible to backup to, but maybe not backup from.
Sorry I am not sure what would be best in your circumstances. You could look at Norton Ghost.
This is correct. You can use N360v2 to backup TO an external drive, but not for actually backing up that external drive. This feature changed between N360v1 and N360v2. There were concerns of automated backups trying to run when the removable drive was not present and therefore missing a scheduled backup.
You'll be glad to know that we'll have broader, more flexible support for removable drives in the next version.

I searched but could find nothing here so here goes. I store my files on an external drive and in 360 version 1 could back that external drive to another external drive. Worked great. Version 2 now gives me the message cannot back up from an external drive!? HUH!?? I wrote letters to tech support and kept getting back generic messages telling me how to use backup - HELLO! I wrote back over and over telling them I KNOW how to use back up. My issue is WHY DID SYMANTEC REMOVE THE ABILITY TO BACKUP FROM ONE EXTERNAL DRIVE TO ANOTHER EXTERNAL DRIVE???? My setup needs this previous functionality. I hope Symantec will respond appropriately to my question here and explain why this is gone - they should have left well enough alone. I have been using "NORTON" products since the late 80's. I need this functionality placed back or else Symantec will lose one of their biggest supporters to date.
Specifically: Will the ability to backup from one external drive to another external drive be added back in to Norton 360 through a patch and if so, when is anticipated this will occur?
Thanks,
Daryl M.
I appreciate the teaser but... I have to take care of backups now. Will this future enhancement you refer to again allow backups from 1 external drive to another external drive? AND IF SO....WHEN WILL THIS BE AVAILABLE because I need this functionality ASAP!
I will look forward to your feedback!!
Regards,
Daryl
If you need to backup now, you may wish try the trial version of Norton Ghost, here. It’s an amazing product and I sure will fill your needs.
I appreciate the insight. I might do that although, I am disappointed in Symantec as the whole point of Norton 360 was to spend more $ to get an ALL-IN-ONE product that worked great UNTIL they removed the previous functionality. It just gets so annoying how corporate America continues to "trick" consumers into having to spend more and more - EVEN when they already have been devoted customers!!
Anyway, I'm hoping the Symantec guy who responded earlier will give more details as to the "correction" they have in store for Norton 360 so External to External Drives work!!!
Much Thanks,
Daryl
Can I suggest that you might wish to post both the operating system and release you are using and the make and model numbers of the external drives. Please explain the configuration you have i.e. how many external drives,
