Hey everyone. I need help, and unfortunately I'm not the most tech savvy person.
I did a search of the forums and there were similar problems addressed, but nothing exactly in line with my problem.
Here is what's going on...
I have Windows XP Pro.
Everything was updated through Service Pack 3.
I installed Norton 360 Version 2.0
It launched fine, and I installed all Live Updates etc.
However
When I "right click" on any random file... if I scroll over the "Norton 360 scan command"
Windows Explorer freezes up.
Even if I don't scroll over the command, the same crash will occur after a few seconds.
Solutions I tried but didn't work:
- I Went to the Symantec website and downloaded the Registry Fix file they have there.
I ran the file, and it says everything was A-OK! But it still crashed.
- Downloaded ShellExView, the Shell Extensions Manager and attempted to disable the "TP Shell" extension
that I believe causes the problem. That way the shortcut would be removed from the list when I right click.
Unfortunately, the program won't let me disable it!
- So, after messing around with this for too long, I simply unistalled everything and went for a clean start...
Same problems again.
Any HELP is greatly appreciated.
Note:
I used this for Office computers.
I have downloaded it on 3 stations.
One computer is fine, the other two are both having the problems listed above.
also...
I'm not running the program PowerDesk which seems to be connected with this error in the questions I've seen.
. I don't even know what that is =)
Thanks in advance!
Tried to reinstall again... no luck.
Aw well.
Hopefully a staff member can give suggestions.

Thinking of the Powerdesk situation – have you installed any other application that adds a function to the Context Menu, the Right Mouse Click list of things. For example, added a Send To item … ?
I was working on a computer with a similar problem. Norton 360 caused explorer to crash. Disabling the TP Shell extention named TPContextMenu fixed the error. You can use Shell ex view to fix the problem, however in normal mode you cannot disable it. You have to boot into safe mode then you can use Shell ex view to disable the shell extention.
The problem doesn't seem to be limited to SP3 either. Though the computer I was working on did have SP3 I did a repair install which rolled it back to SP2. Then I reinstalled Norton 360 and the problem persisted. By disabling the Shell extention though the computer ran normally.
Disable SymProtect Tamper Protection.
I fond this solution at another site and can confirm disabling the TPContextmenu Class shell extension does fix the problem. I narrowed down about a dozen other extensions before coming to this conclusion. It caused similar right click problems in both WinXP and Vista computers. I also had trouble with Powerdesk which works now with the extension disabled. I also could not load MS FrontPage 2002 at all when the shell extension was active as it wold lock up.
I found this thread in actually in trying to figure out what I had disabled. Anyone really know what TPContextmenu actually does? Is it related to the firewall, backup, or antivirus scanning? Disabling made things better, but I'd like to know what I've disabled. nothing in the registry gives a clue.

Darn it!
There may be a more general cause than that which was supposed to have been fixed. Hang on to see if Norton Staff who were involved in the original conflict (that PowerDesk fixed in their product – a wonderful file manager).
