Norton 360 v3.0 has trashed my computer!

Hi all,

Any advice please.

I bought and installed 360 v3 today, all seemed fine with the install.

On reboot the service isn't starting, it times out.

OK I think, no problem, lets remove it and try again. However, the uninstall routine hangs at 'please wait...'

Hmmm... OK, not to panic yet, so I downloaded the Norton removal tool 2010.0.0.98... guess what, this hangs also, at "Deleting Symantec Real time storage protection...".

Not happy at all now. Don't want to have to go through registry manually deleting out anything "Symantec" or "Norton"... :smileymad:

Yes I've tried several reboots etc...

Any help please! As getting pretty hacked off now and will be absolutely looking for compensation from Symantec in some shape or form!

Rossva:

Please advise what security software was on your machine prior to installing Norton?  Also how was that removed from your system?

What is your operating system and service pack level, is it 32 bit or 64 bit.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

SAV Corporate edition, can't remeber the version unfortuantely.

XP SP3, 32bit.

Had a play around last night, got the uninstall routine to run OK for 360 in safe mode, now just trying to run the NRT again, it's getting a bit further, it now hangs the machine on "processing MSIs by registration number" or something similar.

Hi rossva,

You are running a corporate Symantec product - the Norton removal tool and this forum are only for retail/home products; please go to the Business Forums at the link below where you will get the appropriate removal instructions and tools:

Try these:
Method 1.
1. Open Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
2. On the Services list find Norton 360
3. Click on Stop (this will stop the whole 360 process)
4. Now try to run the uninstall, or the removal tool
5. Reboot
6. Run NRT again 2-3 times

Method 2.
1. Start your computer in Safe Mode
2. Run the uninstaller or the Removal Tool
3. Reboot in normal mode
4. Run NRT 2-3 time

Let us know the results.

Hi,

method 1, the service wasn't starting anyway, it times out.

method 2, as i'd already started to do (as above), have now managed to remove 360 (safe mode), then get the NRT to run OK in normal mode. (Then had to fix the TCP/IP stack as 360 also seemed to have trashed that, via removing and reinstalling the NIC). So all is fine... then I've tried to reinstall 360 again... GRRRR... exactly the same, 360 service won't start, times out, now having to go through the same proc again.

Is there any decent logging anywhere to look at to see exactly why this **bleep** service won't start?!

Hi rossva,

You said that you had SAV on your computer prior to installing Norton 360. It may not have been removed cleanly. Once, again please go to the business/corporate forums where you will receive proper instructions on how to completely remove SAV (which is a corporate product; this forum is for home/retail products only):

As per Yaso’s recommendation, the retail version Norton Removal Tool does not work on the corporate versions.  Nor will N360 install correctly until the corporate version is completely removed from your system.  You need to get the correct removal tool from the corporate forums.

How did you remove Symantec AntiVirus?  Why did you remove it?

The "why" is not as important as the "HOW" is here.  If this was installed in a corporate network-administrated version, the user can not fully uninstall the SAV program; only the network Administrator can.
