Norton 360 v3 Backup / Automatic Schedule / Serious Safety Hole?

I had previously posted this thread:

I am trying to better understand the details within the Norton 360 backup.  As I continue to play with the software and consider how it may (or may not) meet my needs, I have come up with what I consider to be a pretty serious hole.

Consider a configuration where you are running a network attached machine that is continuously connected to the internet and has the backup option set to 'Automatic'.    The problem would occur if you are using the online service or if you backup to another network target.

What happens if through user or program error you somehow damage/change a data file that is backed up automatically?

My current understanding of the program operation is that N360 backup only stores *one* copy of a file.  So without the ability to go back in time before the file was actually backed up, N360 provides no protection for recovering files that may have been erroneously modified.

Is my understanding here correct?

Any ideas?  How do you keep Norton Backup from automatically overwriting a good file with a corrupted one?
