A very frustrating problem with 360. I can't turn off the fulls system scan in background feature. It kills my CPU useage and eventually locks up the computer.
Windows XP SP3
I've got just about everything in the settings turned off for 360, aside from removing it.
I have auto updates turned off.
Idle time maxed out at 30 mins.
Before I turned things off, there was an "idle time" checkbox which I unchecked.
Nothing helps. It STILL has to perform that full system scan.........everythime i turn the machine on.
As a note: where the machine locks up is my using the browser IE 8 and at some point when switching links, she locks up. Reboot time.
The settings are similar to what you have described. I had already done that. Get it all setup.........and i rebooted, jut to make sure. And there it goes doing a scan again on startup. I have had a lockup every single scan if im doing something else. Always something new trigegrs the lockup.
Now, I've got just about everything turned off on 360. Turned most of the startup items off in startup manager. As of now..........I have had no scans. But i havent rebooted yet either.
I know this is ‘dumb’ of me, but how do you know this is a Full System Scan? Or is this a Insight Scan? Check the CPU usage screen (bottom right hand corner next to little house).
Dont mind 'dumb" questions at all. haha........mine are too.
I get the norton box in lower right corner of the screen that says it's doing a full system scan. I know it was doing it because CPU usage was high. My lockups could be CPU at 100% but i dont know that. I do know that during this scan all my IE history and log ins go away.
I used to have it set on automatic updates. Would much prefer that but i DONT want full scans going on. Now in the begining it only did it while idle..........the problem here is that i come back and have this CPU hog going on. Thats when I tried turning off the idle time scans. Then it just wanted to scan any old time.
Now I SUSPECT that when it was in the middle of a scan, and it locked up and I hard booted.......I THINK that it must be trying to finish that scan, from a registry note??? Cookie?? or some other link.
I had this problem with v2 and fixed it by doing a total removal of N360 and reinstalling it. I had hoped this would not show up in v3 but....(I believe you are right about the hung bit somewhere but where??!!??)
To fix this follow the directions here if you have a valid subscription; you can find them here for the removal and here for the reinstall. I would highly recommend you read through each before you start.
Please report back here with the results. Thanks for tolerating the 'dumb' !!!
I WILL report back. But the first thing Im going to do is just do a reboot, without being in the middle of a scan and see what happens. if i start a scan.........I'll scream..then do the remove and reinstall.
As you can above, I had the Idle Time only for scans turned off, but i was still gettin Full System Scans while not in Idle and locked up the computer multiple times.
I recieved good advice, the best being to remove and re-install After I read the directions from Norton. I saved those if needed.
Right now, I'm not getting fulls system scans. Here is what I did.............so many things I have no clue to what helped.
I was able to confirm that my Automatic updates was shut off. (in version 3 if its ON, then there will be a check box for idle time scans. I unchecked that box then turned off Auto Updates again)
I went into Startuo Manager ( in PC Tuneup) and unchecked a lot of stuff that i knew i didnt NEED on startup. Nice to have but I can always open the program manually when i need it. Dont have a clue as to if this helped....BUT this SEEMED to be the ticket.
I have PC Tuneup turned off
I have Backup turned off
Right now.....no scans.
Here is what I'd like an answer to:
I THINK that there was a Link somewhere in the registry that HAD to complete an interrupted Full System Scan. If I knew the answer to this one, I'd feel comfortable turning on some of the features of 360. Right now they are being wasted.
I've looked into this and there is an issue with the N360 v3 scheduler. The scheduling page allows you to control the schedule for LiveUpdate and all the Tuneup Scans. Although it doesn't have a checkbox, this scheduler also affects the Full System Scan.
The issue is that when you set the schedule to manual, it isn't applied to the Full System Scan. The Full System Scan will retain its previous schedule. I've logged a defect against this behavior. I can't comment on a release for the fix, but I can say that, as you would expect, the implementation is not complicated.
The best workaround that I can offer you is to set the schedule to monthly for the time being. The schedule is not stored in the registry and it's not easy for you to modify by hand.
Any progress on this issue? My N360 is running a full system scan over and over and over right after it completes one, while the system is definitely not idle, and its absolutely killing me.
Sorry I didn't get back to you here but I was out of town. I THANK YOU for your help here. I took what you said and applied it to a monthly schedule. I'll see what happens. I've had the automatic update turned on but everything else turned off. I've gone to the monthly and see what happens. It's only when I "Shut off the full system scan" that problems happen. It wants to run all the time then. Thats why I was asking about the registry "hooks". There "is" a hook somewhere........I just can't find it.
I'll post here if i get further issues with the full system scan. It was bad enough where I was contemplating switching software vendors.......and I've used Norton for over 15 yrs.
I have the same problem; further, every time N360-3 runs an idle scan it freezes my computer and my only recourse is a forced shutdown and reboot.
It still isn't clear to me how to turn off the idle time scan; I can't find a checkbox for it. Please advise.
I switched from N360-2 (which worked perfectly) to N360-3 to get the highly-touted idle scan feature, and that is the feature that seems to be a problem for everyone. Why isn't Symantec jumping all over this one to get it fixed ASAP???
