Norton 360 V3 / Norton Toolbar 3.5 / Norton IPS 1.0 / Firefox 3.0.8

It had taken me some time to figure out what has been going on, but since I installed V3 over V2 I've been getting on boot up a small Firefox window on the upper left of my screen. Running WinXP PRO SP3 with all the latest fixes and the latest Firefox. The window is nothing more than the application bar (blue) with a standard pulldown on the left and the normal 3 buttons, min, max, and close, on the right. Size is about 1 inch. Maximizing will open it but the main window is blank (white).

I think that small window appears because I'm using the FireFox Pre-loader to start FF on boot up and preload part of it to make FF load faster when I go to use it.

I close this window when it is started with no ill effects from what I can tell.

This ALL started right after I loaded V3.

Now what is also happening is the first time after startup when I open FF is that the Add-On window opens telling me that 2 new add-ons were added, the Norton Toolbar and IPS? This happens after every re-boot and first start of Firefox.

Another oddity is that the Toolbar ALWAYS shows the date of 3/28 which is when I installed V3. IPS shows the date and time of the system re-boot? IPS changed the timestamp every re-boot and the Toolbar stays constant?

Thinking  these might be related to the small window, I disabled the just the Toolbar. Re-booted, same thing with the window and first start of FF displayed the add-on window alerting me to 2 new add-on's added, the Toolbar and IPS.

Ideas? Suggestions? Please don't tell me to use the Norton Removal Tool, I've got Ghost too and don't want to have to set that up again.

I've got Mr. Tech and it produces this list of add-on's, maybe you can see something conflicting?

Tom, sure.

This is the TOP LEFT of the screen...

Clip1.jpg

The corresponding quick launch and task bar showing an 'empty' Firefox session ...

Clip2.jpg

Also, the Norton IPS add-on is updated EVERY morning when I boot, see the timestamp ...

Clip3.jpg

I used to have the Norton Toolbar as well, but that has NOW disappeared? Not sure how to get that back either?

I was thinking that the toolbar and ips were causing the problem, and I uninstalled both and they couldn't be deleted. Matter of fact, for a period of time both were installed on the next boot each time. Now, the Toolbar is gone?

I have tried working on this. It appears to be a 3 ring circus almost. The main players are Firefox 3.0.8, FireFox Pre-Loader (not really supported and an older version, new one on the way soon), and I think the 2 Norton Add-on's.

This much I do know, it all started about the time I installed N360 V3 and the two new add-on's, although I did have the Norton Toolbar before (and it is now gone?).

I also know that if I don't use the Pre-loader, this window doesn't occur. So there has to be some interaction between all this and the Pre-load is the primary suspect now.

My main questions now are :

  • Why does the Norton IPS 're-install' every day?
  • How can I get the Norton Toolbar back?

Another oddity I'm seeing it the Normal Tools Toolbar expand to 5 or 6 lines with some icon's I can't figure out taking up the 5 or 6 lines? Since the Norton Toolbar disappeared, that has stopped happening?

Like I said, I can't pin these things down on anything specific, but it is annoying to me to say the least.

I did have this window happen in the past and then it was clearly due to a Firefox - Firefox Pre-loader problem, but the problem was this only happened when an Add-on was updated, which by default then puts the problem back on Norton IPS which is updating daily.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide for solving this problem or even getting the Norton Toolbar back.

I checked IE 8, the Norton Toolbar is there on it?

I give up! Re-booted and the Norton Toolbar now is working and installed on FireFox. Starting FireFox opens the Add-on’s window showing 2 Add-on’s updated, Norton IPS with the timestamp of this boot and Norton Toolbar with the initial N360 V3 install date timestamp of 3/28.

Hi ispalten,

I am a little taken back as your screen shot shows much more information in firefox than what I show.  I assume your screen shot is taken from:  Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8, Tools > Add-ons?

 I only see: FF Add-ons - 360.jpg

No information is displayed about install date, etc..

Thank you much,

Mumford68

p.s. I believe some things in FF are dependant on IE. Perhaps it was something that needed to be run or re-run and was done so when you opened up IE.  I dunno :)  I've had things happen I am not so sure about, just glad when they work correctly (some day they will :))

Mumford68, don't feel too bad. Siva didn't see it when we spoke either. It turns out I had another extension that DID show the info for you. It was MR Tech Toolkit. Check it out here, http://www.mrtech.com/extensions/local_install/. After installing it will allow you to see the timestamps and other info.

Hmm, could it be this extension that is seeing the files updated and causing the Add-On window to open?

Irv S.

Not quite sure. Disable it and see what, if any, effects it has when it is off.

Perhaps a quick note to the company that produces the MrTech program or people seem to eventually respond at the Mozzila Firefox forum/knowledge base. ( https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+Support+Home+Page ).

I'm wondering if both programs are actually supposed to change dates though.  I was asking myself: What would make an add-on change dates (other than updates)?  Perhaps the fact that the IPS does some checks for each webpage that is visited and therefore MrTech see's a file(s) date and/or time change on a constant basis and keeps reporting it upon each bootup.  Not sure how the add-on works but does the time change when the browser is closed and reopened (after receiving the popup and going to a couple of websites)?

What version of IE8 are you using?

Perhaps (just maybe :)) a shot to Email or Chat support could pull some extra information.

Sorry, I don't have anything concrete at the moment.

I try to use as few add-ons/extensions, etc... as possible but if you wish I will install MrTech and see if I yield the same results.

(There are ways to disable a number of features but Symantec usually recomends leaving all security features running for appropriate levels of protection while being connected to the internet).

Let me know if I can be of any further (or any that is :)) assistance.

Take care,

Mumford68

Real easy, no 'new Add-on installed' window is shown on first start of FF after re-boot.

I've put a message in MR Tech forum about this, so far, no answer.

See this thread here, http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Norton_360&thread.id=11525&view=by_date_ascending&page=1, a Symantec developer and I explored this and did troubleshoot and talk on the phone about it. N360 does delete on shutdown and reinstall on boot the files. MR Tech for FF at least must re-read the FILES in the EXTENSION folder and see these new ones (created by N360 on boot) and declared them 'new add-on's'. IE handles the N360 extensions differently.

See above link, I have.

Thanks,

Oh dear, shot down at every turn I tried :) oh well :)

Thank you for the link, it did provide more information and more time had been spent on it than I realized.

I'm not certain where it will go from here but it looks like you have had a possible influence on future builds.

Take care,
