Any idea why?
I downloaded a trial to evaluate Norton 360 v3 for a friend. A day later I realized my favorites bar was empty and 'Change the way Secuity Center alerts me' link in Security Centre applet was disabled/greyed out. I thought my computer was infected, and after 4 hours, figured out that it was all Norton 360 v3's handywork! What a waste of time!
Also when it thinks there's a bug in the computer, it doesn't display any filepaths or any options what to do with it. Just deletes the bloody files! Files which i've had for years. No problems, and now it's all gone! Is Symantec gonna refund my time and replace my files?
I probably shouldn't recommend this product to him or anyone else..
hi zimba77 - i'm sorry to hear that the trial period is not going well. i don't really understand the problem you are describing regarding your favorites... since you indicate "favorites", i'll assume you are referring to Internet Explorer - do you mean that the Favorites toolbar does not appear in your browser or that there are no URL's listed under Favorites? and I can't seem to identify the Security Centre applet you are referring to in 360...
on the question of deleted files, try right clicking the the task tray 360 icon and selecting View Recent History. in the Security History dialong, look under either "Resolved Security Risks", "Unresolved Security Risks" and "Quarantine" - locate the file and click the blue More Info button - under "Advanced Details", click "Risk Details" for full path information (on the Details tab)

I'm referring to the urls i had save in the Favorites Bar of Internet Explorer 8.
The Security Centre i'm referring to is in the Control Panels.
I've viewed the Recent History but can't get Norton to show me the infected files BEFORE deleting them..shouldn't I be given a choice what to do with them after scan is completed?
Thanks ...
thanks for the extra information, zimba77. Norton adds a BHO to IE but i'm having trouble thinking of how it would impact any of the URL's listed in your Favorites. when you look at them now, do you see and listed or is the list completely empty? it's almost like you switched Windows accounts, which i thought might also impact the security centre applet, but in my testing, even limited user accounts had access to the applet.
in looking at your previous post you indicated that after spending a considerable amount of time, you were able to isolate these problems to 360 - can i ask how you made that determination?
finally, as to functionality to about being prompted to remove files - only files that are compressed or categorized as "low risk" provide the "prompt" option. using the method i mentioned previously, you should be able to restore and exlude files that were treated roughly by the scan.
my apologies as this is not a very helpful reply but maybe we can at least narrow the IE and WSC issues down to the root cause.

The favorites bar does not have any URL shortcuts after the complete scan. First time I suspected it could be due to Norton because i don't have any infection on my computer. I was just testing functionality of Norton to my friend. To test my suspicion, I added google and yahoo to my favorites bar, and manually enabled Security Center again, before reinstalling Norton. After complete scan, my favorites were gone, and security centre disabled!
btw, I don't have any other user accounts on this pc, just admin.
The considerable time would be uninstalling Norton and trying other software like Trend Micro and AVG etc to scan my computer for any infections.. This would be the 3rd time I've installed Norton 360 v3, and it happens all the time.. if it doesn't happen to you, could it be specific to my computer?? that seems ridiculous, no?
For low risk files, Norton does give an option to exclude..... but it only tells the risk.. doesn't mention filenames..
wow, really odd set of symptoms. when you look at the resolved and unresolved security risks (maybe under details of Scan Results as well), what does it show?
