Norton 360 version 5 and AutoCAD 2006 and AutoCAD 2007 file dialog box problem

Hello there people,

I have finally figured out after almost 3 days of pulling my hair out, that this Norton 360 Virus protection program is the cause of my challenges with trying to open drawings in AutoCAD 2006 and AutoCAD 2007.  I also initially had problems opening Windows Word and Excel, and could not open any files in those programs either.  Using Windows XP SP3.

I was able to fix this challenge in Word and Excel by opening those two programs and going to the "Help" tab and using the "Detect and Repair" function.  That was easily found somewhere on a web discussion.

But as far as the AutoCAD fix.  I could not figure it out, because the first day I had installed the Norton 360 program, AutoCAD seemed to work just fine.  The problem came up the following day, after I rebooted my machine, I suppose.

The file "Open" or "Saveas" features no longer worked, and AutoCAD froze.  I had to quit the program using the Task Manager.

I found on the Autodesk site a discussion that handled the fix for  Norton 360 version 3, and tried to use it, but it gave me an error, and did nothing.

IS THERE A FIX FOR USING AUTOCAD 2006 AND 2007 WITH NORTON 360 VERSION 5 ?

IS THERE A FIX FOR USING AUTOCAD 2006 AND 2007 WITH NORTON 360 VERSION 5 ?

I can hardly believe it !

Just after posting this question, I continued on my search to find the answer and I actually foud something that worked !

Here it is:

UNREGISTER BUSHELL.DLL

ALthough there is no fix for this issue currently.  In the meantime, to use AutoCAD, we recommend that you unregister a Norton file, buShell.dll. Be aware that unregistering buShell.dll disables the Norton 360 backup context menu options, backup status overlay icons, and Norton Backup Drive.

STEP 1 - Turn off Norton Tamper Protection1

Start Norton 360.

In Norton 360 - In the Settings window, under Quick Controls, uncheck Norton Tamper Protection.

In the Security Request window, from the drop down menu, select a duration and click OK.

Click Close.

STEP 2 - Unregister buShell.dll1

Navigate to the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

In Windows 7 or Vista: Locate and right-click the cmd file, and then click Run as administrator.

In Windows XP: Locate and double-click the cmd file.

Depending on your version of Norton 360, do one of the following:

For Norton 360 Standard Edition in Windows 7/Vista/XP 32-bit: Type the following text, and then press Enter.

cd C:\Program Files\Norton 360\Engine\5.*

For Norton 360 Standard Edition in Windows 7/Vista 64-bit: Type the following text, and then press Enter.

cd C:\Program Files(x86)\Norton 360\Engine64\5.*

For Norton 360 Premier Edition in Windows 7/Vista/XP 32-bit: Type the following text, and then press Enter.

cd C:\Program Files\Norton 360 Premier Edition\Engine\5.*

For Norton 360 Premier Edition in Windows 7/Vista 64-bit: Type the following text, and then press Enter.

cd C:\Program Files(x86)\Norton 360 Premier Edition\Engine64\5.*

Type the following text, and then press Enter.

regsvr32 /u buShell.dll

In the RegSvr32 window, click OK.

Exit the Command Prompt.

STEP 3 - Turn on Norton Tamper Protection1

Start Norton 360.

Click Settings.

In the Settings window, under Quick Controls, check Norton Tamper Protection.

Click Close.

Hey there Yogesh,

Yes, thank yo uso much !

I appreciate your reply.

This is the same solution I found just a little while ago.

I am hoping they actually come up with a fix though, rather than short-changing any of the functionality of the 360 product, as it states in the beginning.

But this is great for now.

Thank you again.

I have this problem on two computers, and was successful with an XP machine, but not the Windows 7. The Windows 7 is a 64 bit processor, and when I enter the "cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton 360\Engine64\5." at the command line and hit enter I get a "file location not found" note. I am running the Norton 360 standard edition.

Help!

Fasrnu:

You'll need to add an asterisk at the end. You can also nagigate to the folder first in Windows Explorer to confirm the folder name.
