I have tried searching this already but either it's a new issue or I didn't choose the right words so sorry if this has been addressed already.
I was trying to install Norton 360 and it wouldn't let me enter the last number of the product key. Of course the agree and install button won't light up until you do. So then I tried the renewal below even though I wasn't renewing, I was using a different Norton product and that didn't work either.
I have used NIS (Norton Internet Security) for years. So I then removed NIS and NIS backup (which had never been used, I don't know if that matters) and tried again to install and enter the key. Same thing.......
I rebooted in between uninstalls of NIS. I did do the uninstall that leaves the info in case you want to install a Norton product in the future. Should I have done the complete removal?
Please help. I've never had this happen before. I have Windows 7, 64 bit OS.

Welcome Christy,
The key is 25 characters to be entered without any dashes. The program will add those as you go. The format is five sets of five characters. The program only displays upper case letters regardless of which case you enter.
If you are changing products, not just versions of the same product, you may need to use the Norton Removal Tool to completely uninstall the old product. That's here: http://www.symantec.com/nrt/
If you have been using the identity safe you may need to reinstall your NIS and save that data. 360 may not pick it up as you install it.
Keep us in the loop. We'll be here when you need us.
Years later I finally get back to this.......I tried using the removal tool and it is still not letting me enter the last number of my product key. I don't know what to do at this point. My Norton expired today. Please help!

Hi Christy,
Is your key 25 alpha-numeric characters? And are you trying to enter them without and dashes and not worrying about the caps lock key?
Since your current subscription has expired you will have to uninstall the old version before you can install a new one. Let's see if we can do all of this in a short series of simple steps.
It's too late to back up your identity safe data, sorry.
I already did all of that except I bought the 360 on CD. Any other suggestions? I have since downloaded the free trial of 360 version 6 just so I'd have something since mine had expired. I waited too long to get back to this problem. Could my key be defective?
Just to avoid confusion, I didn't download the free trial until after I had tried to install my version on CD. So I haven't tried to reinstall it since I downloaded 360 Version 6.

Christy,
The 'trial' version is a full, complete version of 360. To use your key just click on the word 'renew' in the lower left part of the opening screen. It will display a place for you to enter the key from the box you bought. Let us know how it goes. As always, we'll be here when you need us.
If you have N360v6 installed you wont need the CD. If you are still having problems with your Activation Key, You may be best contacting Customer Support. Live Chat is usually the quickest. http://www.norton.com/chat.
I'm sorry, I guess I am confusing the issue.......
I've already bought the CD and I don't know if I can take it back. I'd like to be able to figure out how to make it work. I only downloaded the 360 version 6 after I tried and tried to get the cd version to work. My intention was to buy some time for a solution since my NIS 2011 had expired and I can't work unprotected. I had no idea this 360 would be this difficult. I only mentioned that I had installed the 360 version 6 after so no one would think it was part of the initial problem.
I have several computers so I normally prefer the cd. This is the frst time I've used anything other than NIS. But even after removing it from my computer and then using the removal tool as well and rebooting every time it still won't accept that last number. I don't have caps on and I'm not including dashes.
I will contact customer support. I just assumed that I wasn't the only one with this problem and it would be easier to ask around in the forum.
Thanks again and feel free to keep trying to help. I will keep you posted.
Dick, are you saying that I could possibly use the product key from my cd to renew my downloaded version?
I was thinking when I downloaded it that maybe it would clear the way for the cd to work when the trial period runs out.
Thanks,
Christy
Christy,
I'm going to try to sort this out in my mind. Please correct me where I'm off track.
Your old Norton product expired. You downloaded a trial copy of 360 so that you woulld be protected from all of the 'nasties'
You also bought a box copy of 360. Which flavor of 360 did you purchase? The keys are not interchangable.
If all of this is on track then . . . .
You may be able to use the 25 character key from the box to activate the downloaded, and currently running copy of 360, on your computer. If there is a defect in the CD which will not allow you to use it to install 360 you can talk with customer support here:
Some letters and numbers are not valid because they can be confused with other characters. When you try entering them, nothing shows up on the screen. You mention numbers, I believe the numbers 1 and 5 are not used because they can be confused with I and S.
If those are the numbers your having problems with, please check your activation code again.
You are right I think but I'm not sure about the order of things.
I purchased 360 Version 5 cd about three weeks ago for 5 PC's. When I tried to install it on the first PC after having used nothing but NIS for years, it wouldn't accept that last number of the product key even after removing the old NIS and then with the Norton removal tool. I tried repeatedly, not using caps or dashes and rebooting. Then my NIS expired.
So, after I had tried everything I knew to do and everything you suggested, I downloaded 360 version 6 (apparently that came out since I bought version 5), just to tide me over until either someone out here came up with a solution or I had time to call Norton support. When I called support before I was on hold so long my hair turned gray........I can see why you recommend chat.
Since I've had the cd about 3 weeks or so I'm not sure they'll take it back now. So I would like to use it if possible.
I wonder why I had no trouble at all downloading 360 vs.6 but can't install 360 vs.5? Do you think it's a defective product key?
