Don, I tried that method just now. And immediately after tried to shut off my computer and was still having the issue. So I don’t really think the issue’s fully fixed. I think the agent might just be saying that because they might not really know.
The shut down hangs I’ve been having have started around the time other people have been talking about it this weekend.
Brocktoon’s post from above is close to my issue. It’s true what he says, I sometimes don’t even know about the norton hanging issue until I turn off my computer or try to restart it. And Tuesday morning when I was having this issue, Norton’s UI was loading normally and this was still happening. Tuesday night the issue seemed to have disappeared. It’s come back today.
@Primetime89 May I suggest you repair your Windows install by running “sfc/ scannow” under an Admin Command Prompt? Then also run DISM: “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth”
Restore Health does not work If I do the Scan Health and it finds no components to be fixed. I can run Restore Health, and it’ll go but it will fix nothing.
Yes, i did. Found nothing wrong. Ive ran both of these commands and over the years when I have issues they might fix the issue 2 out of 10 times.
That said, knock on wood, the freezing has stopped during shut down or restart since lare last night so Im almost 100 percent certain its a norton issue. Like i said, my experience is similar to brookton. The white ring of death left Tuesday but it would still hang on shut downs or restarts.
Edit: and as soon as i type this it starts hanging again.
And I have done multiple malware scans, including Nortons, smart, quick, full and startup the malwarebytes deep scan after downloading it and the windows security quick, full and offline scan. They all found nothing.
Second Nore: i tried sfc scannow just now and it repaired some corrupted files. I ran dism scanhealth and it said it was repairable. So now Imrestoring health. Go figure, they werent doing this yesterday. I will inform later.
My shut down issues might be tied to this week’s Windows 11 optional update that dropped Monday. The update mucked up my start menu so that whenever i try to search I initially get a white screen before the search results appear. When I do that the issue with the hanging shut down and restart happens. Of I dont mess with the search so far it doesnt hang.
Also used the R&R tool. I think it fixed the issue where the software updater always ran 30 minutes after signing into my computer. Used to only do it every few days but very recently increased to beidone daily after every sign in till now.
Also used the Windows Installation Agent via Microsoft to update to 25H2. Norton has been working fine on it.
Hello this is Don. I would suggest that you completely shut down your computer even if you have to do a hard shutdown. Start it back up and let your computer fully come up and do not access any Apps especially Norton then use the NRandR tool Download and run the Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows and run it according to the instructions from the download site for remove and reinstall instructions. Good luck.
LMP I had this problem with Norton 360 startup on Windows 10. I fixed it by uninstalling Norton Private Browser. It seems to be doing a lot at startup.
Just a post back on the white screen on startup of the user interface. It appears to have been cleared up for around 5 days now, at least for me. I had been starting up with my network disconnected, then connecting the network after the user interface had started. This was a completely successful work around, while I waited for Norton to fix the issue.
The problem was present on 2 of my machines, which had been upgraded from Win 10 pro to Win 11 pro. I don’t know it that had anything to do with it, but the info is here for the gurus to consider.
This is the Norton 360 version that is now installed, again for information purposes: 25.9.10453 (build 25.9.10453.954)
The problem appears to have been cleared by Norton. I saw no “program updates” during live update, just virus signature updates. I suppose they could have slipped the hotfix in outside of the normal program activities. In any case, the problem has been clear for the last several days, with no risky “remove and reinstall” activities on my part. I wanted to go for several days of no problem before reporting back here.
Gurus, please express my appreciation for the fix.
