Norton 360 won't install, no messages, just sits there!

I'm trying to install Norton 360 via CD to a new Windows 8.1 laptop. When I insert the CD and click 'Launch Norton Install', nothing happens. No messages whatsever. I installed it ok on 2 other computers -- a Windows XP and a Windows 7 system. The N360 is for 'up to 3 PCs' and expires in June 2014. Any idea why it won't install on my new system?

Thank you for your help with this!
Before starting my N360 install, I uninstalled the McAfee security that came with the computer using the uninstall feature in Windows. Per your suggestion, I then downloaded and ran the MCPR tool from McAfee which completely removes McAfee products. Upon completion, I rebooted my computer, then again tried installing my N360 from the CD. As before, the drive attempted reading the CD but then just sat there -- no errors, no messages, no progress.
I am using a new external DVD/CD USB drive and it seems to be ok as I used it to download other software last week and played audio CDs on it fine.
I followed your link to download the latest N360, it asked for my product key, and it installed ok. It is still a mystery why it wouldn't work from the CD. I've only used that CD twice before. If the disk is defective, don't know how it got that way as I take very good care of my disks, but shouldn't there be a message like 'unable to read disk' or similar?
Thanks for you help!

Hi gwalks - just curious what version of N 360 is on the disk?

I believe you must have version 21.1.0.18 or newer for it to function on win 8.1 - I am not sure if an older version would not download on Win  8.1 or if it would or would not throw an error - just a thought on my part!

No, your disk is not defective; it just happens sometimes on some systems if you bought an early release CD of a version. I've seen and had it myself before.

Nowadays i always use the most recent download. It also saves a lot of Liveupdating.

Which version is your CD?

yes, might be. I bought it June 2013. Where do I look for the version #?

Then you bought NIS 2013 aka v20 (check sticker on bottom of the box). The version which runs best on Win8(.1) is V21. Symantec does not use the year in the version number anymore since last september.

So : The result is what counts!! You have V21 on your Win8 running now.

You might want to upgrade to V21 on your other PC's as well. You will probably have V20 there now. Check under 'Info' under 'Support' on the main menu.

For upgrade  'Check for new version' under 'Support' on top of the main menu and follow the prompts.

Yes, it is Version 20.4.0.40. The box says for Windows 8, 7, Vista and XP. Does that not include 8.1?

I guess I was under the impression that automatic downloads update it to be the equivalent of the latest version -- at least for virus detection. I have 136 days left on my license, and always upgrade to the new version every year. I should be doing that more often?

Thanks again for your help.

As said, v21 runs with W8.1.

V21 has several major improvements in function over V20. You are always entitled to a free upgrade to the latest version, as long as your key (and so your subcription) is valid.

You are right, if you say you are on the same virus and other definition level, but not functionally within the program.

This is my upgrade approach (i service a lot of systems for friends and the like) :

- About september/october, when the new version usually appears, I install it on two less important systems with different OS-es through a download. Afterwards I wait untill it's stable. Most of the time it takes one month, because there a many different systems in this world and there are always some glitches. For that i use my own experience and that of this forum.

- Then i update all 4 of my own systems through the 'Check for new version' function.

- Afterwards i wait for another month and gradually migrate all systems i service, when i am on location or with a remote session.

In the Norton settings, you will find an option to 'Download new versions automatically', which is on by default. Norton will only start to do that, if a version is stable, but not agressively. You then receive an offer to upgrade. Once you accept that, you will be upgraded.

If you want to upgrade yourself, use the function i mentioned in my earlier post ('Check for new version' under 'Support'). To stay on the safe side, start to look in december of any year, after you have checked here on this forum.

We are in March now, so you can safely upgrade your other systems. I've seen hardly any problems now.

If you take this approach, you do not have to reinstall each year with a CD; you can just enter the new key which is in the box, when you press 'Renew' on the bottom of the main menu and register it in your Norton account.

Great info. Thanks for taking the time!

Only suggestion I have for Norton is to give some sort of message back when it can't install from disk, such as "incompatible operating system". It's disconcerting to be sitting there waiting, thinking it's doing something when nothing's happening!
