Norton 360v2 renders network storage inaccessible

I do not find the detail very clear. However, I would like to suggest that perhaps the problem here is in the header rather than the body of your post. That is, you refer to network storage and the handle that is invalid begins Z (hopefully z:\ rather than Z;).

I therefore believe that the issue is that your network storage is not being seen after Norton 360. This would make loading Outlook 2007 difficult to say the least becaue it is trying to access the all important pst file. To prove that the issue is with network and nothing locally you could copy your pst file (via CDRW or other) to the local drive.

I'm guessing here, but perhaps you have not set up network access in the Norton firewall. If you havent then tcp/ip traffic on a home network is NOT automatically enabled when you install Norton. In short the firewall is working. You should therefore create a rule under firewall traffic rules and move the rule to the top. If this is unclear, just ask for more details.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.  I have created a rule to allow all communications in and out on the IP address range for my home network.  This does not solve the problem.  I cannot open pdf files, jpeg files, txt files, doc files nor run a program that is on that drive.  Using Windows Explorer I can see the folders and files.

I am running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3.

Everything was working prior to installing Norton 360v2.

You are doing good. I sense your frustration but believe this can be resolved. We need to make sure that rule is working. Without the rule you certainly would have had trouble. Is the rule at the top of the page? Turn off firewall for 15 minutes,( right click norton icon and select). Does the problem go away?

Thanks again for the reply.  Yes I am frustrated because I can access the drive for a short period then I am locked out.  I also have other networked drives that I can access with no problems.

This recent information is a bit confusing - when is the NAS accessible, and when is it not? Is it a specific amount of time, or after a certain action? Is it accessible at startup, but then after 15 minutes it isn't? Are you trying to access this through Windows Explorer, Norton 360 v2, or both?

Also, your reply indicates that you have additional drives that you CAN access without problem. What is the difference between this problem drive and the others that you can access? I apologize for the additional questions; I hope to understand your situation better with more information on the problem. Thanks!

Thanks for picking up on the question.  The NAS is accessible for a few minutes after a restart and appears to remain accessible until after starting to work with a file on the NAS.  For example I can use Windows explorer and right click a file and view in Microsoft Picture and Fax viewer, I cannot then view a second file.  After a restart the same thing occurs opening a PDF file of an Office document, the first one is OK then nothing.  I have Free Agent installed on the NAS and it runs OK without Norton installed but will not run after installing Norton.   I think that Norton scanned the drive without complaining since I saw it running through the various files during the scan.

This is one of three NAS systems.  One is running Microsoft Home Server, one NASLite 2 and the problem one is a Dell Powervault.  The Powervault is an older NAS and I have to modify the "Network security: LAN manager authentication level" in Local Security Policy of Administrative Tools.  The setting has to be "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated” in Vista or either "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated” or "Send LM & NTLM responses” in XP.

I have removed Norton 360v2 due to this problem and performance degradation I experienced.  CPU usage was continually running above 50% and all programs were very slow.

I think that is a shame. Its also a pity you did not answer the questions asked. Who knows, maybe contributors could have assisted you further.

I thought I answered the questions.  If I failed it was not intentional. At least the software was free after rebate.

I understand. The questions I had were

" Is the rule at the top of the page? Turn off firewall for 15 minutes,( right click norton icon and select). Does the problem go away?"

Dont worry now, because I understand you have uninstalled.
