Wiped out? What, specifically, do you mean by that: completely erased, corrupted, can't be accessed at all? The only things that come to mind for me that could cause this are a--completely coincidental--drive failure (if you can't access the drive at all), or the possibility that your daughter's machine already had a particularly virulent form of malware on it when she tried to install Norton, and the malware wiped or corrupted her hard disk in reaction.
Let us know if there's anything we can do to assist in getting her system back on line!

she had installed Norton on Friday & Saturday she tried opening her computer & it wouldn't open. Even her OS had disappeared. She took it in to the shop & they asked her had she installed something & that's when she said Norton the night before. They checked her hd & the whole thing was empty. They re-installed windows but she was so upset because she lost all of her pics & videos...thanks
Ouch. That pretty much seals it, from what I can tell. We've been seeing a particular rootkit, called zeroaccess, that contains a "tripwire": if your security software actually detects it and tries to do anything about it, it shuts everything down. I hadn't heard of that particular one wiping a hard drive, but I can't think of anything else beside malware (other than human sabotage, which wouldn't seem to pertain in this case) that could produce this kind of result).
I'm sorry you (and your daughter!) have had to go through this. And again, let us know if there's anything we can do to help. As she rebuilds her system, making sure you've set up (and can still access) your Norton Account will allow you to easily reinstall the instance you've dedicated to your daughter on her clean OS.
You can still recover the lost data:
I've used this to recover files after a reformat/reinstall. You can use the trial to see if it'll work. Note: you should stop using that computer immediately and install R-Studio on another computer, plugging the "wiped" drive into it.
Unless a scrubber was used, the data weren't 'wiped', only the 'index' to the content was deleted (i.e. partition table, boot sector) which can be reconstructed.
I'll assume the value of good backup discipline was learned here...regularly back up anything you don't wish to lose.
