Norton 8.0 restore

I have a Symantec 8.0 ghost backup that we are looking to restore image. I can read and restore image. How do I restore entire system for this ilder version of Ghost.

Do you have Ghost 8?

YES

You need to be able to boot to Ghost 8 using a floppy disk or CD.

You will also need to have the image file somewhere Ghost can access it, usually on a second hard drive or maybe DVD.

The Ghost image you have is either a partition image or a whole disk image.

When you start Ghost you either choose: Local > Partition > From image

Or: Local > Disk > From image

Then you select the image file and then you select where you want it restored.

At what point do you have a problem?

I'm booting from a UBCDWIN BARTPE CD that has Ghost on it. I'm mapping to a network drive and running process from cd. I'm getting a 643 error that says disk couldn't be locked. I must have some open files. I will copy files to a usb drive and boot from cd with no network connectivity.

Putting the image on a USB drive will make it a lot easier than trying to do it over the network.

As for the error about not being able to lock the drive, make sure you are selecting the right drive.

When your booted to the bartpe disk, windows on the hard drive will not be in use so ghost should be able to lock the drive.

Just be aware that the drive letters may have changed by booting to the PE disk.  BartPE may now be the "first" drive and the others may have been pushed back.

It can be hard to identify the correct drive or partition through Ghost, it doesn't show you the drive letters or volume names, you select the drive by drive number and verify it by the size.

Sometimes you need to use Ghost to "browse" through the drives and recognize them by looking at the folders or files on the drive.

Thanks. I will give it a try. Image is 33gb so it will take some time.

It's a little confusing how I tried to explain it.  But everything is different in Ghost as well as different when running it from a PE disk.

In windows, the first hard drive is HD0

For some reason, in Ghost the first hard drive is HD1

Booting to a PE disk, the PE disk may become HD1 (in ghost) and the real hard drive "pushed back".

So you can't go by either the normal windows location or the normal Ghost location, you basically have to figure it out new each time one way or another,

I use UBCD4win myself and have Ghost 8.2 I installed though the plugin.

You should have no trouble if you select the correct destination.   You must have got the error because you selected the BartPE drive or the RAM drive.

Best of luck,

Dave
