Last night I had to recover my new PC through the BIOS facility. I could not then and cannot now restore in windows 7 to an earier point as win 7 throws an error message that states, Norton anti virus is preventing it working.
I closed the error message only for my PC to shutdown on it's own. When I rebooted, my desktop was totally black! The pointer moved though. Only task manager worked as usual.
I uninstalled Norton 360 through safe mode with networking and my PC then restored; however, when I put Norton back on, it updated to new version and I lost my back up set. I am having to do another online back up again now.
So - my questions are:
- Has anyone else had the loss of desktop by running system restore with Norton active at all please? Any info?
- Will Windows system restore 'not' work with Norton on?
- Is the loss of back up files normal please? I do not see how this happened as my password and user are the same for norton and the files were not on my PC - it was online storage? I can't understand why a new back up was required
To be more accurate regarding the back up set: Once the new version was installed, Norton 360 would not run a full system scan until I did a back-up.
I thought, 'All my files are backed up; just through the last version'. They may have been visible in my online storage account I didn't look); but, the new version could not recognise or view them anyway - Norton indicated that no backup had ever been run.
Personally, I would have thought that as the new version was going on the same PC as the one it replaced (same activation key and ip address and user name) it would connect me to my existing back up set - and 'not' say you need to backup.
That leads me to one final question and thanks for your help by the way: Live update was set to on; so, why did I only get the latest version by reinstalling and not by auto update a while ago I wonder. I had to hunt it down instead.
And, can you/ should you uninstall auto detect pk 9 that has appeared on my desk top and the installation files please?
I can't see any method available and it is not in my program list?
I was just going to write a post about this very issue. I too cant restore to a previous point using Windows 7 system restore; although, my screen isn't black.
I tried the Norton registry cleaner on Monday. Everything worked fine... no errors, job done. The next day my usb adapter starts prompting me with disconnecting and reconnecting messages. It finally ended by freezing my usb adapter and disconnecting completely.
I tried to reconnect but the usb is no longer recognized by my computer. I then removed and reinstalled the driver for the usb adapter. No dice. My computer no longer reconizes my adapter. I then try a system restore. Windows goes through the motions of restoring to the closest restore point. It however gives me an error when it reboots saying it cannot restore to the previous point because Norton 360 is blocking it. Ok. So, I try stopping the Norton service. No luck. Can't shut it down no matter what I try.
Lets summarize:
> Can't connect to internet via wireless because Norton bugs up my registry with its cleanup utility
> Norton provides no utilities to restore registry to previous point
> Can't restore my computer because I can't stop Norton service
Today. My next solution I'm going to try will be to try removing Norton 360 from my system, then doing my system restore, then re-installing my Norton 360. I hope to god this works.
I must add: I have never been able to restore with Norton on this new PC (even by disabling anti virus as per tech guy help).
Presently, I am at university; therefore, I was going to sort this issue out later when I had the time but, yesterday, it took a turn for the worst.with the black screen problem.
Usually, I just get error messages stating that Norton is conflicting with restore - but the desktop has always been fine. The restore system seemed to get stuck in a 'loop' yesterday that couldn't be broken.
I must say though: I had Norton about 6 years ago and it ground my PC to a halt; the new version performs well. Or, that could be the fact that this PC is only 5 months old and a lot more powerful?
DannyB, as stated earlier, you must turn off Tamper Protection in order to do a Windows System Restore.
- Open the Norton Main screen> Click "Settings" > Un-check "Norton Tamper Protection" at lower right (last item) and save your settings.
- Run your System Restore and then re-enable Norton Tamper Protection.
As far as your backup problem, perhaps the uninstall and reinstall of Norton had something to do with the prior files not being able to be seen. I can't recall the exact process, but somehow using some kind of code, the backup sets are labeled and Norton 360 backup keeps track of them. I'm thinking the uninstall removed the program's tracking ability. Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain it better.
Got home. Turned off the tamper option. Performed restore without any problems. Had to uninstall and then reinstall my belkin usb adapter driver. It was a little shaky at first but seems pretty solid now.
One thing is for sure... I'm never touching Norton's reg.clean again!
