"Norton antivirus auto-protect cannot run with the 64 bit kernel. Please restart with the 32 bit kernel, then re-enable auto-protect."
I keep getting the above error - have just bought and downloaded this software along with the Norton Internet Security for Mac today. I don't understand what it means about restarting with a 32 bit kernel. I bought and downloaded the only antivirus software offered for Mac - it wasn't like they had one version saying 32 bit and the other 64 bit.
Can anyone translate what that popup is saying into English for me? I don't speak fluent IT.
Thanks to Bombastus for the link about running LiveUpdate, that should eliminate the error message. By way of explanation, starting with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6), Apple allowed booting into either the 32- or 64-bit kernel on supported hardware. This meant that, in order to support both modes, products like Norton AntiVirus needed to have 32 and 64 bit binaries in their kernel extensions (if this doesn't mean much, don't worry, it is no longer a concern if you have the current version).
Initial versions of NAV 11.x did not support the 64 bit kernel, which for most users was not an issue, since at that time the machines which ran NAV would boot into the 32 bit kernel by default. So part of the rationale for the error message being fairly technical was that it was targeted at users who had made a deliberate effort to boot into the 64 bit kernel.
This changed last year, when Apple starting shipping some non-XServe machines that booted into the 64 bit kernel by default. As a result, NAV 11.1.2 and NIS 4.1.1 were shipped by Symantec, primarily to address this issue.
The updater said it (the updater itself) was already running, and I had to reboot a couple of times to avoid that problem, but updating the Norton product did avoid the original kernel-related error message, eventually.
