"Norton Anti Virus is performing background tasks" freezes computer.

This post is related to http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NIS-2010-Background-Tasks-Freeze-and-Hard-Reboot/m-p/212870 - but since I can't comment and that post wasn't 'resolved' I'm starting a new thread.

I have a 64bit Vista (Home Premium) computer with 4gb ram and plenty of space on my c-drive.

SInce about one week, my computer started totally freezing. It happens many times a day. Initially I thought it was Firefox or .NET updates, or Jing or Trillian. But disabling these didn't help, and then I started noticing that everytime the machine crashed was after I stepped away for a bit. So I googled the sleep mode and went through all the recommened fixes. Only to find that sleep is not the issue, because when I set the computer to sleep manually, rather than letting it time out, it 'wakes up' just fine. And I noticed that every time the computer froze, it had the little Norton window on the task bar, saying 'Norton Antivirus is performing background tasks'. When I come back to the computer, it's sceen is black (as it should) and the display 'wakes up' just fine. I can even initially click to activate some windows. But as soon as I click on anything to DO something, I get the wait symbol and the screen/window fades to white overlay.

I'm a wit's end. Having spent many many hours already trying to fix this. Since I work on my computer, this is a major hit to my work. I'm pretty sure now that it's a Norton issue, but not sure how to fix it. Previous posts say uninstalling it doesn't help. Besides, I do want a virus protection and have another year of my Norton subscription to go...

Any ideas??

thanks,
