Norton Antispam does not detect spam emails

Hi,

My previous thread on this subject appears to have died as well! Norton antispam integrated with outlook 2003 fine and all the bars appear to work - I can select an email manually and send it to the norton antispam folder etc. However antispam completely fails to detect any spam at all. no email is marked as [Norton antispam] - despite the fact that I am getting 20-30 spam emails a day! I have tried turning antispam off and on again, reintegrating with outlook etc etc - all to no avail.

any ideas anyone? I am getting desparate.

Phil

What version is your NIS?  What type of email service do you have?

Hi

I am using NIS 2009 v 16.5.0.134 and outlook 2003 with POP3 accounts that do not require any authentication or encryption, running on XP pro with SP3.

I have all the updates for windows and norton and office.

The problem started suddenly after downloading an update for Norton Ghost using liveupdate. I was using NIS 2006 at the time and support suggested upgrading to NIS 2009. However this has not solved the problem. I have tried starting and restarting windows after inactivating antispam to no avail. I usually use a restricted user account and have even upgraded this to an administrator account to see if this would affect things but no luck. The toolbar integrates and works fine - norton just fails to detect any emails as spam.

Can you check with your Service provider(ISP) and make sure that they have not changed the settings to SSL recently?

Also, let us know the ports used for both incoming and outgoing emails from your email account(Outlook). You can also try deleting the third-party plug-ins in Microsoft Outlook
1. Open Microsoft Outlook.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. On the Other tab, click Advanced Options.
4. Click COM Addins.
5. Delete all plug-ins except for the Norton AntiSpam Outlook plug-in.

Yogesh

incoming port 110, outgoing 25 (ie standard port setings.)

There have been no changes in SSL and I have no other COM add ins running.

Philip

Try enabling This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) for POP3 in the email settings of Outlook.

If I enable SSL connectioon I get the following message

 - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Philip

Is there no-one else on this forum with this problem? It appears no-one has an answer, and it is extremely frustrating!

Hi plhermette

Can you provide the Internet headers for the mail that should be classified as SPAM?

In Outlook 2003, right click on the message and then select "Message Options".  There should be a section in the bottom of the dialog labeled "Internet headers".  Note that the headers have the form "HeaderName: HeaderValue"

Please do not post any headers that contain your personal information; the only headers that I am interested in begin with "X-", e.g., "X-MimeOLE".

Thank you for providing the headers.  Based on what is shown, it appears that your mail is not being filtered through Norton Antispam's engine.

Your email configuration is not consistent with the behavior you're seeing, ie,filtering should occur.  What version of Norton Ghost are you currently using?

Also, if would be helpful to see if Norton Antispam's engine is loaded.  You can use Process Explorer to determine this.  Process Explorer is a tool you can download from Microsoft (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx).

1. launch Process Explorer

2. Select ccSvchst.exe in the process tree.  You want to select the one under explorer.exe

3. Press Ctrl+d

4. In the lower pane, see if the following are listed: asFilter.dll, ccEmlPxy.dll

Thanks

Hi James,

I am using Norton Ghost V 14.0.4.30167

There is no ccSvchst.exe  under explorer.exe - it is under MOM.exe but this is just below explorer exe so I guess thuis is trhe one you mean.

asFilter.dll,  is not listed

ccEmlPxy.dll is listed

ASOEHOOK.dll is also listed if this is relevant?

If I click on ccSvchst.exe further up the tree under services.exe - asFilter.dll is listed as well as ccEmlPxy.dll and ASOEHOOK.dll

Philip

having asked a question, would there be any chance of a reply to my response?

I'm sorry about that delay -- something has slipped through the cracks, possibly because the forums don't have an automatic "Message for Me" flag.

I've sent a signal up the line.

thanks!

They are obviously asleep up the line!

Philip

I’m sorry that James hasn’t followed up. The dll that is missing is the part that filters the spam so that would explain why you don’t see the filtering. I’m not overly familiar with this area of the code but I suspect a re-install of the product would probably fix this up.

If only it were that simple!

Just to be sure, I have uninstalled and re-installed NIS 2009 today - still the same problem.

I have used Norton Antispam for several years without problems. It originally came as an add-on pack and worked fine until I did a liveupdate in december 2008 which seemed to corrupt it. I think it was a Norton Ghost update that did it. Anyway symantec support tried to fix it online to no avail and suggested the update to NIS2009 which has integrated antispam. I removed all norton products using the Norton removal tool, installed NIS2009 and ........ STILL THE SAME PROBLEM! Antispam integrates with outlook 2003 fine, the toolbar is there and all the buttons work. I can select an email and click the button to send it to the antispam folder but no email is automatically flagged as spam. Since I have a number of email accounts and receive about 60+ spam messages a day this is rather irritating. Outlook finds some junk email but Norton Antispam was much more efficient when it worked.

If it is simply a missing dll file, can I download it and install it manually?

All the best

Philip

Actually, I suspect that the file is on your system. To be sure, you should have Windows search for the file. If the file is found, please report where it is at on your disk. Also if the file is found, can you report it's version number along with the version numbers for the following files that are on your system (locations vary)? WS2_32.dll, ccL80U.dll, SHLWAPI.dll, ADVAPI32.dll, MSVCR80.dll, MSVCP80.dll, USER32.dll and KERNEL32.dll .
