On Friday evening I was using my computer as normal when I was prompted that NAV 2009 had detected and removed a virus threat. Thinking nothing of this, since Norton has always prevented infection of my system files in the past, I dismissed the dialog and continued.
This evening my system crashed and I had to reset it. Upon attempting to log in to Windows, I was immediately logged out again - this happened constistently in Normal and in Safe mode.
Thankfully I was able to research the problem using another computer and found that C:\Windows\System32\USERINIT.EXE had been deleted - a crucial component required for logon. I replaced the file using Recovery console and was once more able to log in.
My question is this - if my USERINIT.EXE had become infected, how did NAV allow this to happen? Or is this a false alarm and the file is in fact clean?
Help would be much appreciated to restore my faith that this product will not be making my system inoperable in future.
Please find screenshot from NAV history attached.
Thanks,
Alex
