Norton Antivirus 2011, iTunes 10 and iPhone 3GS

I have recently installed Itunes (V10.2.2.12) on an HP laptop running a fully patched version of Windows XP Professional and Norton Antivirus 2011. I have had problems with Itunes hanging when I disconnect my iPhone 3GS. The issue is that Itunes detects when the phone is connected but not when it is disconnected, so it hangs waiting for a response from the phone that is now disconnected. I eventually found by trial and error that the problem disappeared when Norton Antivirus was disabled and subsequently Norton Antivirus appeared to "learn" the behaviour so that now iTunes detects the phone disconnection even with Norton Antivirus enabled.

Is this a known issue with a more scientific fix? I probably wouldn't have posted this issue except that it results in iTunes hanging during iPhone software upgrades so you end up having to do a full restore.  I can't see any reference to iPhone-specific issues in the Forum but it may be related to issues accessing the iTunes store, which I don't use.

Thanks,

Brian
