Norton Antivirus and itunes Configuration Issues

Deana:

If you haven't started an upgrade to Windows XP SP3 by the time you read this message, please temporarily delay the upgrade.

I looked back at the date of your first post in saint's thread here, and it is dated November 23, 2010.  It is therefore impossible that an aborted System Restore performed on November 24 is the cause of the problems with your IE 7 browser and all your other third party software.

I'm certain that renewing your NAV subscription would not cause any of these problems, so my best guess as of today is that many of these problems have to do with the fact that Microsoft stopped supporting XP SP2 back in July of 2010.

Since it's difficult for me to accurately diagnose what's causing all these problems with the information you've provided to date, I would suggest that you get your new Acer netbook up and running first and then take your HP desktop in for service to have your Windows XP and IE browser brought completely up to date (ask the tech to download iTunes 10.1 to your HP desktop as well if you can't get it to download onto your netbook).

If you feel comfortable trying to upgrade to XP SP3 or IE 8 yourself, please feel free to do so.

Imarci:

Thanks for the suggestions. I had not began the download yet for XP service pack 3 before i checked back today.I understand at this point, its probably best to have a computer technician work on my XP computer. And to get my new Acer netbook  up and working.

I purchased a HP 556s  8X External Slim Multiformat DVD writer  with lightscribe today from a reatail store because that was what they told me i needed to go with the Acer netbook. But when i got home i read the system requirements and it says minimun hard disk space requirements 1 GB free for included software installation, 10 GB free for DVD video disc creation(18 GB free for double layer) and it may require using 2 USB ports if so Do not unplug either of the two connectors. So i think i will have to return it and get the other one they had was just a DVD-Rom drive, it said on the package for Netbooks, and was cheaper as well. I'm trying to get the Acer going.

My only question about the XP at this point is there any reason why just cleaning up the registry with IE7 as is, checking to see if itunes store works after that, updating adobe acrobat reader, yahoo etc would not correct the current issues with the IE7 browser and the other things? Then having the technician work on the service pack 3, IE 8, and or itunes? Not that i am avoiding the important updates, just wondering if the current browser could be corrected somewhat as is,until i can get it in for a technician for the IE8 and service pack 3 and the more he has to work on the more he will charge is why i am asking also, or should i just take it like it is  currently with the 117 registry errors.

I have apparently been abandoned with my issue to date. I don't understand in messege 192 reguarding the CCleaner 117 registry errors, Imarci said it would be "fun to see how many errors/issues are found and she would send me a list of items that are safe to fix,"... somehow we went from there to no longer helping me?

I had a few unanswered questions in messege 193  I asked about uninstalling Defraggler and Malwarebytes. So I went ahead and uninstalled them both.

I then ran the CCleaner registry scan once again and took a closer look at the items found many were leftovers from NAV 2009, some were from Orbit, Defraggler, and Malwarebytes. I fixed those issues using the CCleaner and left the others alone which are  mostly Installer Reference issues, until i can determine if those are safe to fix. I've been researching information about the safety of using CCleaner on other support forums. Some users refer to it as crap /junk cleaner and say it is safe to delete all the issues it finds are junk relating to the registry values not the registry keys. Others say that NO registry cleaners are safe to use. Here is a screen shot of the remaining 24 registry issues.

untitled 2.JPG

I doubt if fixing these registry issues will correct my issue with itunes, and i may still need to get a technician to install itunes10 and service pack3, however at this point unable to determine what senerio has caused my issues I am thinking i am having  several separate issues something is wrong with IE7, registry errors, and the itunes download being too large for dial-up.

Also I mentioned previously that my ISP recommends updating the IE8 optimized for AT&T Yahoo, which i believe is an Add-On and not the same as plain  IE8? I don't want to install IE8 until I am sure which one I need, and the IE8 optimized for AT&T Yahoo is not delivered via Windows updates or from FileHippo as recommended.

I'm checking into the IE8 optimized for AT&T a bit more, the download for it is found at the AT&T Software Center http://att.software.yahoo.com/choice.php here is what it says :

att.net recommends that you upgrade now to the new safer Internet Explorer 8. Optimized for faster access to your att.net services.

Deana:

You were not been "abandoned".  As far as I can tell from your comments in message 198, you have not applied a single security patch or update to any of your Microsoft software via Windows Update for over two years, and you have now reached the point that your Windows XP SP2 is no longer supported by Microsoft.  You have continually resisted my advice that you upgrade your Windows XP to SP3 and apply all necessary SP3 patches before you attempt to upgrade your browser to IE 8 or start fixing third party software such as iTunes and Adobe Reader (see my instructions for upgrading your Windows XP OS and IE browser in message 200). You have declined to post an iTunes diagnostic report that I requested, you attempted a Windows system restore of your own accord while I was trying to diagnose the cause of your problems, and you uninstalled the Orbit download manager after aborting your initial (and only) attempt to download the iTunes installation file using that download manager. We were four days into troubleshooting before Tywin7 and I even realized that you had NAV, and not NIS, installed on your computer.

It is certainly your prerogative to ignore any advice given to you in this forum, but I am also entitled to withdraw my assistance if I feel that my advice is being rejected.

Hopefully someone in this forum with greater technical expertise than myself will be able to suggest a shortcut that can get you up and running.

Imarci:

I am sorry you think i have been rejecting your advice.

There has been alot of confusion reguarding my issue, but i have indeed tried to follow your advice for 3 weeks, and i thanked you for helping me.

As far as me not posting the itunes diagnostic report you asked for, i tried to do that but i recieved a warning about posting my system information, i assumed it would show my  ip address and this was unsafe i explained this warning.

Yes i did the system restore on my own hoping to correct the issue, people make mistakes reguarding which NAV or NIS they have. If i was perfect I wouldnot be asking for help.

Yes I uninstalled Orbit because of the way it reacted when i tried to use it and you said that you had never used it on your computer.

As far as me not applying a single security patch to my computer in two years ...the reason is that i had my computer up to date 2 yrs ago, then took it to the only computer business in my town because of my defragmentation issue. They completely wiped it out and reformatted it at that time. They charged me $160,for something i could have done myself reformat. When i got my computer back the defragmenter issue remained even after they reformatted it.Then my grandmother became ill and i took on the job of being her caregiver in my home with hospice until she passed away recently. I did not have time under those circumstances to update my computer, its not like i just refused to update. Things are not always as they seem. I did not feel it was appropriate to share my reason here. Now that i have the time i am trying to update. And this is also why i am nervous about taking my computer back to the same repair business, if all they will do is reformat it and apply the updates.

Merry Christmas Imarci and I'm sorry you choose to withdraw thanks anyway.

My add remove programs shows that i installed 11-12 critical updates in 2009untitled 3.JPG

I've ordered my XP Service Pack 3 CD from Microsoft tonight. It was $3.99 + $5.99 shipping +.99 tax for a total of $10.94 and should arrive in 1-3 weeks. I think it is wise to have it on hand for future use in case i need it.

I've also backed-up all my music files and photos to a CD in case the repair technician has to reformat my computer.

I've got the Acer netbook up and running with the modem installed, but since the store only had the 1 CD burner which i was unsure would be compatible with the netbook, i had to go with the CD reader alone feeling pressured to get it up and running. So I won't be able to burn a CD of itunes10 until i find a burner that is compatible with the netbook. Total expense to date for working around this issue is $386.94 not including the repair fee for the XP.

Deana:

This will be my last post in this thread.

On November 25 (message 13), Tywin7 recommended that you use Windows Update to install all important updates, including Windows XP Service Pack 3. You responded, in part, that you didn't want to do this because you had heard other users complain about bugs in XP SP3 and IE 8 and that " 'If it's not broke don't fix it' seems like a good rule of thumb".

On December 13 (message 200), I presented you with two options:
Option 1: Upgrade to Windows XP SP3 First
Option 2: Upgrade to IE 8 First

Under Option 2, I warned you that if you tried upgrading from IE 7 to IE 8 before you installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP that you should "be aware that I'm not going to spend any time helping you troubleshoot if anything goes wrong since you can always use your Acer netbook."  I assume that the $386.94 in repair costs that you are referring to in message 208 includes the cost of your new Win 7 Acer netbook.

On December 19 (messages 204 and 205)  it sounded like you had decided to go with Option 2 and try to upgrade your Win XP HP desktop to IE 8 yourself via Windows Update or a download from the AT&T support site.  Now it sounds like you've decided to take your desktop computer in for service so that a professional tech can upgrade both your Windows XP and IE browser (message 208).

So here's my last piece of advice, for what it's worth.  Run Windows Update on your new Win 7 Acer netbook to ensure your OS and IE browsers are  fully patched.  Then try to download both the iTunes installation file and NAV 2011 upgrade to your Acer netbook over your dial-up connection.  If the files are too large to download over dial-up, figure out another way to obtain those files (e.g., use a public WiFi hotspot somewhere in town, ask a relative with access to a faster Internet connection to download the files to a CD or UBS flash drive, try using a software download manager like Orbit or Internet Download Manager, ask Apple support to mail out iTunes on a CD, etc.).  Then dispose of your old HP XP desktop - send it to a recycling depot or offer it "as is" to a charity.  If you haven't had the time to update any of the software on your HP XP desktop for the past two years, it will be even more time-consuming maintaining  two computers with two different operating systems going forward.

If you want to keep your old HP XP desktop, for whatever reason, and you're unhappy about the service you've received in the past from your local repair shop, then why not at least attempt to use Windows Update to upgrade to Windows XP SP3 and IE 8 first (see message 200) or just wait a week for the XP SP3 CD to arrive in the mail?  You have nothing to lose at this point if you have all your important user files backed up.

Good luck to you, however you decide to proceed.

Imarci :

Thanks again for the advice. I understand.

The point where i became lost was between messege 200 and 201 when you told me if i had not already started the download for service pack 3 to temporiarily wait about trying the Service pack 3 download.

I had not chosen which option i wanted to try A or B as i was still waiting to discuss the registry errors that were found because you told me it would be fun to see how many errors were found using CCleaner and not to worry if alot were found you would send me a list of the things that were safe to delete, and thinking about which senerio caused these issues.

I was unsure at that point which or if either option would be wise with 117 registry errors.

It sounded like  in messege 201 you did not think i should try either option, you felt than none of the 4 senerios were possible, just take my computer to a repair techinian.

I was leaning toward option A upgrading service pack 3 first, but i also wanted to know about which version of IE 8 i needed to use with my ISP AT&T Yahoo because i wondered if i downloaded the basic IE8 I would still have issues with my browser displaying my e-mail and web pages.

Apparently you do not wish to help me further even if i upgrade to service pack 3 successfully.

My ISP recommend IE8 optimized for AT&T, Your instructions as i understood them were to only upgrade IE from Windows updates or from FileHippo, I was only trying to clarify that before moving on.

I also described the CD burner asking about compatibility with the Acer netbook, as i have never purchased either in the past. No suggestions to help me get it up and running. The expenses total are including the Acer net book, the modem, the cd drive, and the service pack 3 CD $386.94 I do feel this is an expensive work around and i could have possibly purchased a nicer laptop for the price, if it were not for the need to quickly resolve my issue.

I apologize once again but i had hoped discussing my issue may help others as well, I certainly never ment to turn into a dispute or upset you.

My feelings are hurt as well as i spent over 3 weeks working on this issue including lectures and criticism which are good if they are constructive to the issue.

You did not have to help me at all so Thanks for the help, I won't bother you good folks anymore.

Thanks also Tywin7 your suggestion of repairing the Apple Software Updater was helpful and i am going try your instructions for converting Youtube video to music files when i get things working correctly.

Thanks SendOfJive for the help on doing a screen print shot, very helpful so that i could show my issues.

Danistayohihv Unadetiyisgv !~Merry Christmas to  you all and  Nvwadohiyada~Peace
