Hold on a minute. You renewed NORTON INTERNET SECURITY (you sure it’s not Norton AntiVirus) but have Norton AntiVirus? I’m confused. Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security are two seperate products. As you mentioned antiVirus does not have firewall or some of the advanced feature of internet security. This can determine further actions.
Tywin7 :
Yes that is what i am wondering happened, it is confusing could it be that i renewed the wrong product? I used the renweal button at the bottom of my current version 17.8.0.5 to renew a few weeks ago. But when i first contacted Norton by e-mail they suggested i upgrade to NIS 2011 for free, and when i tried it that download was terminated at 75% as well just like the itunes 10 download was.
Do you have a recept of any kind regarding the renewal?
You can contact Customer Support via the following chat link and ask them whether your key is for internet Security or AntiVirus. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs
tywin7:
Yes i believe i still have my recipt for the renewal in my e-mail. I'm trying to get to my e-ail and look now but having trouble getting the page to display.
Alternatively you can check at mynortonaccount, if you had created one. https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/default.do
Tywin7:
I've checked my e-mail reciept and I purchased Norton Antivirus 2010 on 10-23 for 44.99. I guess I thought I had NIS because of the price differences in the products on-line verses from a reatail store. Norton Anti-virus 2011 is 39.99 in the store. Wonder why its so much more online? Hmmm
So it appears that renewal installation conflict is not the problem then, however i appear to be using Norton Anti-virus 2010 and not NIS. That explains why i did not have the "Smart Firewell" feature but have all the others Imarci and myself have been discussing ok.
The issue remains unable to go to the itunes store and was unable to donwload the itunes 10 update , or the free Norton 2011 upgrade, which the link was sent to me e-mail by Norton e-mail support. That update failed as well. I'm just baffeled at this point as i was when this began. Something is keeping me form downloading any updates, seems like some security issue. but I'm still working on the itunes 10 update now again today to see if it will complete, with Download insight and auto-protect -disabled i doubt it will.Any further suggestion besides going to other support forums you posted???
I don't mind uninstalling my Norton 2010 going out and buying the 2011 product, but I'm not sure that will fix itunes issues. And If it will give me the same issue as now, what would be the point.. I believe Saint, who is having a similar issue tried that and still itunes will not work.
If that’s the case, you SHOULD NOT be downloading internet Security.
Try upgrading to Norton AntiVirus 2011
Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.
- Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton AntiVirus Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later
- Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include removing out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router. This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable. DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
- Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.
- Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier. Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually.
- Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.
- Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet. Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete. You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.
Run the Norton AntiVirus 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1. If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

Thank you again for helping me here. I understand your instructions but the problem is that my second support attempt was by phone with Norton and as soon as i told them i was a Dial-up user they said that was my issue the dial-up connection they said was the problem. They told me "the only way I would ever be able to complete the download would be from a CD" LOL But I had renewed it in years past by purchasing it on-line. At that point phone support offered me a refund and told me to "just go to add and remove programs and uninstall Norton and go out to a store and buy it on CD." they told me and i agree that it is nearly impossible to work phone support while on a same line dial -up connection. So i asked will this fix my itunes as well they were unsure.I asked should I run the Norton clean up tool before i go buy the CD and install it. they said no that is not necessary just remove from add and Remove programns and that is all. The refund was suppose to be 3-5 days i think. But my Norton 2010 is still showing i have 357 days left on my subscription. I think if i uninstalled it like you say that my key would be invalid...unsure I can try the downloads and steps you suggested .They never mentioned anything about disconnecting my internet while i had no protection they jus said to uninstall it after this phone support is finished and go buy it from a store and everything will work correctly.Glad i did not listen to them and leave my pc unprotected. And i wanted to try to work with configuring the software i had already renewed to understand the problem before I went out and bought something that would have the same effect, if this makes sense what would be the point if itunes will still be blocked? This sure has been a headache i can't see that i did anything wrong to cause the issue thus far. All i did was renew my existing subscription, the only setting Imarci had me to chage that i did not already have turned off was Insight Protection. I posted in anoter post in this topic about the article itunes suggests that anti-sypware programns can cause this issue. And my itunes 10 download jus now failed once again the connection was terminated and the error said "itunes has an invalid signature and the download has been removed from your computer." I don't know what to do to correct this issue???
I also noticed that Norton store costs more than the regular or online retailer like amazon. Therefore, I tend to purchase a new version cd each year from the cheapest source rather than renewing.
Isn’t there an internet cafe or friends house that you can try and perform these steps of removing and reinstalling Norton? I know the pain of using dialup because its bleep too slow and drops all the time! Any starbucks or mcdonalds nearby? They tend to offer free wifi.
Hi Deana:
Glad to hear you're still pluggin' away. Good to know that we're troubleshooting NAV, not NIS.
It's not critical, but one of the reasons that I asked you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is that it is only about 5 MB large and can be downloaded in under 15 min with a dial-up connection. NIS 2011 is about 85 MB large and probably takes over 4 hours to download, so you have to waste alot of time waiting to see if your your NIS download is going to pass or fail.
Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer with only basic Windows system files and drivers. It's a bit dangerous to work in Safe mode if you're on the Internet because you won't be protected by a firewall or your NAV antivirus software, but it if you're still having problems in Safe mode then we'll know for sure that NAV isn't the culprit.
____________
MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 * NIS 2011 v. 18.1.0.37 * iTunes v. 10.1.0.54
I should like to point out that internet won’t work in safe mode, only safe mode with network connection.
Tywin7:
I'm on a home computer not a lap top that i can take to a cafe for free wi-fi access, sorry wish that was the case.
Tywin7:
You're correct. My instructions in message 10 of this thread asked Deana to choose Safe Mode with Networking from the boot options.

Imarci:
Yes still working on this crazy issue, trying to keep my sense of humor here but i am so upset at the support i gotten from Norton and i cannot see buying the CD if it will cause the same issue with itunes. I'm usure about safe mode but I'm willing to go back to your link and try the download again to see if i still get the warningabout to protect my safety the site has been blocked etc. What a headache and although slightly different i still think Saint's issue is similar as far as the same two programs causing itunes store to be unavailable.
Imarci :
i also wanted to say thank for returning to help me out, and what you mentioned about having a friend download to a CD for me also is not a good option as all my friends and family in this close area have dial-up connections as well.
To get into safe mode, repeatedly tap the f8 key until a menu appears. I found out that continually holding down the f8 key as commonly advised, does not work as Windows treats this as a stuck key.
Imarci:
I'm having trouble finding the link for the malware site to download from I've looked back over all 4 pages of this topic and don't see it anylonger. Can you please post it again Thank you.
Malwarebytes is located at “www.techspot.com/downloads/4716-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html”. You certainly do not want malware! :-S
Imarci :
I found the link and went to the site and tried the download without going into safe mode and its working now:) I chose to save it to my desktop is this correct?
