Norton Antivirus and itunes Configuration Issues

Imarci:

The full scan of MBAM has completed and found no infections I was going to past the notepad in this reply ,but got a warning about this webiste accessing my clipborad. But I'm confident there is no Malware on my system.

And I had another idea of maybe what to do to fix my itunes download issue.

When i am checking for apple updates using my Apple Software Updater from itunes player, I get options for downloading itunes + quicktime, Bonjour for windows, Quicktime,  and in a separate box Safari 5 .

I have only been trying the one for "itunes + Quicktime" alone, I did  not in any of my attempts try to download all of these updates together.  I'm now wondering if i should have selected all the options for the download? Maybe the Bonjour update for Windows is the part i am missing to make the rest of the itunes signature vaild once again??? Oh could it be that all of this was so simple i needed all the update options selected? Hoping this is  a soultion.  Thanks!

Bonjour , also known as zero configuration networking , enables automatic detetction of computers, devices, and services

on IP networks. This update is recommended for all users to improve the useability and compatibility of your existing Bonjour installation.

I really think that this is my issue I've restarted the Apple Software Updater Download and selected all the updates shown this time.

This Time Bonjour is downloading first. 2.25 MB for Bonjour,39.86 MB for quickTime, and last in the list is 93.13 MB for itunes+Quicktime.

This makes sense now! Keeping my fingers cross once again that this time the itunes 10 downloads will all complete now that I'm also downloading the other options selected Bonjour and Quicktime dowloads as well.

I will report back when it had time to finish and let you know if this fixed my issue.

Deana:

I doubt that Bonjour is the issue.  Each time I update iTunes I manually disable the Apple Mobile Device and Bonjour services and I have no problem synching my iPod nano or purchasing songs on the iTunes store via WiFi as long as the iPod service is running.  Unless you have a remote for your iPod or use Apple's wireless AirPlay speakers to play music you probably don't need Bonjour.

And don't install Safari.  It's Apple's version of a web browser (similar to IE, Chrome and Firefox).

Imarci:

Ok I understand your suggestions i did not think i needed Safari 5 when i read its details.

I did however already download Bonjour it completed with a green check mark beside it.

The QuickTime 7 is downloading now 39.86 MB then the last one on the list is itunes + QuickTime 93.13 MB .

And I am doing the 'Download Only "method again. I really hoping this time works.

If not I don't know what to do next.

Seems I had no malware on my system.

I still never got as far as the defragmenter issue only got as far as completing the download for Defraggler, have not run it yet.

          Imarci:

Reguarding your messege 100 where you talked about checking the security history for the file dfsetup200. exe i checked that part and what you said was correct it was  listed as unproven Activity allowed once. I do not see a check file part on my File Insight page it just says "very new"and  "good" now I hope this part is ok then. Thank You.

Hi Deana:

Don't worry about Bonjour.  I believe the latest version of Bonjour is always bundled inside every iTunes download, so if you checked iTunes + QuickTime as well as Bonjour you're just going to download 2 copies of Bonjour.  It shouldn't make any difference to your installation - it just makes the size of your download larger.

Ditto for QuickTIme - you're downloading 2 copies of this software as well.

I have my fingers crossed that your iTunes installer works this time.

Imarci:

Thank you. Yes i am praying here.

I looked at my add and remove programs before i started the downloads for Bonjour and Quick Time and i saw that i had each already on my pc so i figured i might possibly need them both to make this work.

So far Bonjour has completed with a green check mark and Quick Time is getting near finished, still praying here.

So this itunes issue and the defragmenter issue seems to be the only ones remaining now at this point.

Hope this works tonight with the itunes download, then hope tomorrow i can work on the Defraggler or ChkDisk still unsure about how to run Chk Disk on XP, I've never run a command prompt before.

Imarci:

If this itunes 10 downlaod fails again, and we  come to the point that we cannot do anything else except a complete uninstall, as Apple suggest  "in some RARE cases is necessary"...my CD that came with my ipod says "ipod+ tunes 2006" is this CD just to install the ipod Classic or is it for itunes 6 as well?

I'm just thinking ahead as to  clarify what I will be left with if i never correct this issue (hopeful but worried after 14 attempts now).

And I'm guessing if this download IS succesful that ipod will likely need an update as well? Do they usually need updated when itunes is updated? Would be my luck to get itunes working then the ipod not work ugh.

No more word yet from apple e-mail support maybe they will contact me tomorrow, usually takes 24 hrs i think.

Imarci:

The second part of my download for Quick Time has just completed and was verified and now has a green check mark.

No connection termination has occurred so far.

Now the last portion of the updates for itunes 10+QuickTime has started.

Imarci:

The download has failed once again during the last part of the download for itunes+quickTime during the verification part and my connection was terminated again, ugh i sat here with it the whole time, and it appeared to verify QuickTime  installer alone it is still in the download folder. Very dissapointing!!!:smileysad: Will check back tomorrow for more ideas or help.

So which download failed? The updater or the website? Imo, your best bet is to download the files (itunes, quicktime, Norton AntiVirus 2011 file (http://www.Norton.com/nav11), Norton removal tool (http://www.Norton.com/symnrt)) from an internet cafe. Plus, there’s no star bucks or mac donalds in your town?

Gah, forum software miss link the Norton removal tool. Its www.Norton.com/symnrt

Deana:

Sorry to hear your Apple installer failed again.  You still haven't tried several suggestions we've already made, including:

1.  Updating your Windows XP to SP3 (messages 13 and 55) - (it wouldn't hurt to upgrade to IE8 either)

2.  Asking a friend to download the iTunes installer files to a portable USB drive or CD

3.  Downloading the iTunes installer (NOT downloading and installing - see message 2) from the Apple (message 64) or FileHippo (message 61) websites.

4.  Installing a download manager to manage a download from FileHippo (message 61)

5. Downloading from FileHippo in Safe Mode (see messages 10 and 33)

I would recommend trying option 3 and downloading from the FileHippo website, since you have already been disconnected from the Apple servers several times.  I personally think that option 4 is your best bet but you can go ahead and try option 3 first if you want.

I have a few other ideas but there's no point if you insist on using the Apple installer to try doing all your installations.  The minimum requirements for iTunes specify that you need a broadband Internet connection and a 1 GHz processor, and I haven't been able to use dial-up to use the iTunes store or download large iTunes updates for over 2 years now even though my laptop is fairly new.  Your dial-up connection is much more robust than mine if you've been able to connect to the iTunes store without any problems up until now, but you may have to start trying some new methods (e.g., a download manager) to work with some of the newer and biggger software programs out there now.

Tywin7:

The download that failed this last time was by using the Apple Software Updater again, had hoped that by choosing all 3 parts of the download (Bonjour, QuickTime, and itunes+QuickTime) might work, but it did not work.

Bonjour finished and so did QuickTime , but the last part failed and was removed again as having an "invalid signature."(Doing it this way the last portion was only 17.7 MB)

Yes we have McDonalds and other places but I do not own a lap top computer, I'm using a home computer.

I'd like to purchase one sometime in the future, however it is quite frustrating to have to go purchase something that expensive just to get my itunes software working correctly again. It would be a good work around if I had a lap top.

I don't know what else to do at this point except keep itunes 8 like it is, can't go to the itunes store... just so i can keep using my ipod Classic, or attempt a complete uninstall of all apple software then try the download again after a complete uninstall(Which was what apple support says in some rare cases is necessary.)

Maybe Imarci will have some ideas about my situation or maybe Apple support will contact me back by e-mail in the next few days. Thanks for the help!

Imarci:

Thank you again. I will try suggestions 3 and 4.

Its not that i keep insisting on using the Apple Installer, just trying to make sure I tried all possible methods to correct the issue, before I move on and try something else.Using Safe mode is intimidating to me. I did try the download installer from Apple website, the time before last, by saving it to my desktop the last attempt, that failed as well  so will try the fileHippo method.

I appreciate the help very much! I will report back after trying suggestion 3.

Hi Deana:

The FileHippo site also has older versions of iTunes 8 and 9 on the download page, so if you're worried about installing  iTunes 10 you can try installing one of the earlier versions first.  It's alwasy easier to upgrade to a newer version than to roll back to an older version if you don't like iTunes 10.

But first things first.  We have to figure out how to get large files downloading to your PC before we can do anything else.

Imarci:

Ok I understand and thanks for telling me filehippo has older versions of itunes 8 and 9 that is a relief to know. Seems to be a very helpful site.

I'm downloading the Orbit Downloader right now it is almost done 84%

Imarci:

I've completely saved the Orbit set up to my desktop and started to run the install of it but there are some set up options i am unsure about such as Gap Pro??? And on the portion where it has boxes checked marked to

create a desktop con,

Create a Quick launch icon,

Start Orbit inSystem start up,

Add to Windows Firewall exception,

Set my home page as Orbit Downloader start page

The bottom says Other Browser Intergrate and FireFox has a check mark beside it, the others do not have a check.

I thought i should ask  you before i continued. Thanks!

Imarci:

I just got an e-mail from Apple Support and they confirmed that a "Broadband connection is required to get and use itunes 10."

They told me to go get broadband and it would work LOL i wish i could.

I wrote them back and told them i can only use dial-up in my area and to please help me focus on if we can at least fix  my itunes 8 so that i can go to the itunes store once again as i could a few weeks ago and keep using my ipod clasic device.

It sounds like even if i am able to somehow get the download  itunes 10, that the itunes 10 store still would not be in working condition.

Do you still think i should keep trying the File Hippo way with the Orbit , which i still just have as a set up on my desktop, or the safe mode methods or should we now just focus on getting itunes 8 working?

Please let me know what you think and if i should continue with the Orbit let me know about the options for gap Pro etc. I didn't think i should let Firefox be intergrated so i waited.

This may all turn out that the only way I'll be able to go to the itunes store will be by going to the itunes website and show the page in my current itunes 8 player with that link.????

I'm not trying to skip your suggestions just save us both some time if itunes 10 will never work for me.

And I will see what apple has to suggest Thanks!

Hi Deana:

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.  My posts may be a bit irregular until Wednesday morning (December 1st). I've already exceeded my connect-time hours for November (I only get 30 hours per month with my plan and my ISP charges extra for every additional hour) so I'm only going to be checking my e-mail twice a day until then.  I came down with the flu last week :smileysad: so free public WiFi at the local coffee shop isn't an option for a few more days.

Regarding the Orbit downloader, the options you choose are a matter of personal preference.  I would only choose "Add Windows Firewall Exception" if I were installing it on my system.  I assume you don't have a FireFox browser on your PC, so as long as IE was automatically detected during the installation you don't need to worry about FireFox.  If you change your mind later you can probably change these preferences from within the software anyway.  I have no idea what GapPro is (I don't have Orbit Downloader on my PC but I'm planning to try it out).

If you haven't started the iTunes download from FileHippo and don't want to get too fancy, I would just go to the link I gave you and try the "normal" download first - no Orbit, no Safe Mode since you say that you've successfully download large files over your dial-up connection before with no problem.  Keep it as simple as possible and then go to the Orbit download manager if the "no frills" download doesn't work.

I agree that it's highly likely that you might still have problems connecting to the iTunes store with iTunes 10, but if you can't connect with iTunes 8 and repairing iTunes 8 didn't solve the problem then trying a newer version of iTunes might work.  If you're still hesitant about upgrading to iTunes 10 then you might want to go to the iTunes for Windows forum here and search for your iTunes error message ("The iTunes store is not available" or whatever the exact wording is).  Someone in this forum might have run into the same problem and have a suggestion that would work for you.
