Norton Antivirus error; cannot uninstall

After installing MAC OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, I have the same problem on both my computers, an intel-based Imac and a MacBook Pro:

I have an old version of Norton Antivirus (10) installed which I have not renewed and do not want anymore.  Whenever I restart my computers I get multiple windows with the error message: "Norton AntiVirus Error, Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not continue.  Please run LiveUpdate or reinstall Norton Antivirus and restart (Code 10)"

Problem is, I can't run LiveUpdate because my subscription expired and I don't want to renew it.  And I've already disabled Auto-Protect and that didn't help.

So, I tried to uninstall Norton Antivirus.  I found the uninstaller in the Symantec Solutions folder, but when I run it I get another error message: "Nothing found to uninstall, The Symantec Uninstaller did not find any Symantec products to uninstall.  The Symantec Uninstaller removes Symantec products from the current startup disk only."

Now this is absurd because Norton Antivirus is clearly in my applications folder as is its preferences files.

So I went to the Norton website and downloaded a current copy of the Uninstaller.  No luck, it produced the same message as above.

Help, I just want to get rid of these annoying multiple error windows everytime I start up my computers.  I'd prefer to just remove everything related to Norton.
