If you are allowing your computer to sleep or hibernate Norton will check for issues when the computer resumes. Its a normal process Norton designed into their product, and should abate once the tasks complete. If they do not there COULD be a larger issue at hand such as possible malware on the system, hardware issues.

A 100% disc read/write usage isn't necessarily caused by a single process unless it is the result of potential viral infection.
