Norton AV 2012 Idle Scan shuts PC off

I recently upgraded from AV 2011 to 2012.  After each idle scan the PC shuts off which is a pain.  I've actually come back to my PC after a break and notice a Norton pop up window saying Norton has finished it's idle scan and will shut down the PC in x minutes. I've checked all the settings and can't find anything setting that controls the issue.

Cheers,

Sorry to hijack this thread but why don't I have the sleep button on my quick scan dialog?  Only turn off and stay on.

Well I soved my own problem :smileyvery-happy:

Hi Darksta,

It's a Great News

Cheers..

Hi senthilkumar,

Thank you for your response.

1. I am discussing Idle Scan (IS) which like a manual Quick or Full Scan I understand their functions.

2. You are refering to a Scan Now Quick Scan which is a manual selection made by the user for a Scan Now and not the same as a automatic IS or a scheduled scan

3. The issue I'm pointing out is that the IS (automatic Idle Scan after the PC has been idle for 10 minutes) when completed turns off the PC. In Scan Now, I can see the option to stay on selected in the Scan Now Quick Scan, Scan Now Full Scan and Scan Now Custom Scan UI. There must be another location where there is a UI that has a control for the IS to let the PC option to stay one, turn off and etc in the same fashion as the Scan Now UI has

4. I upgraded from 2011 NAV where IS did not turn off the PC after it completed it's IS.

5. NAV is being used on a desktop PC and Win XP Power Management of the PC is not being used.

6. How I use NAV -

- is to have a scheduled Full Scan every night at 2am where NAV turns off PC after the scheduled FS

- to have NAV run a IS after 10 minutes of Idle time.

7. Observations -

- besides the above in my 1st post I dug into the scan logs and do not understand why NAV ran a Full Scan at 15:05:59 and turned the PC off. I was out on the road at this time and left the PC on for access. There is no Full Scan scheduled at this time.

- the rest of the night when I got home and turned the PC back on looked like this

2011-09-11 5:10:13,Info,Full System Scan results,Completed,Full System Scan,0:03:10:12,"2,757,625","2,752,999",513,"3,508",596,9,"9,455","167,824",0,0,0

"Burner"

Hi Burner,

Thats right, idle scan is different from manual quick scan or full scan

I have found settings for idle scan, there is a option to stay on after idle scan

Go to Main UI->Click on scan now->click on custom scan->Click on edit scan in pencil mark for full and quick scan

There you have Scan Schedule-> There we have option to select stay on after idle scan.

I have attached the screen shot below.

Hope this helps,

Thanks,

Thank you for your response but please focus as the issue is not about a creating custom idle scan which is what you are addressing above. If you don't understand this please forward to someone more senior.

The issue is about the default idle scan and how to control it when it's shutting my PC off. The issue has happen several times and I have been unable to find in the UI the location where one can control the default idle scan settings to choose what it does with the PC after a idle scan has been completed.

Hi burner,

Please refer to the screenshot in senthilkumar's first post above.  "On scan completion, my computer should..." appears at the bottom of the scan window.  Configure this during the scan.

Hi,

This could be an issue arising with the computer going to sleep mode when Norton Quick Scan starts the Idle Scan

Can you check if your computer is set to sleep in 10 minutes or 20 minutes? If 'Yes' set it to sleep 'Never'

( To set it to 'Never', open Control Panel' and go to Power Options and change when the computer go to sleep)

Let us know the results..

Prithiviraj S

Correct me if I'm wrong but any selections in the Scan Now UI or it's Custom Scans UI are independent of the default Idle Scans found in the Settings/General/Norton Task Settings.

Please read -

Idle Time Out

When you turn on the Idle Time Scans option, Norton AntiVirus determines when your computer is idle and runs its scans at those times. You can specify the Idle Time Out duration after which you want Norton AntiVirus to identify your computer as idle. For example, you specify the Idle Time Out duration as 10 minutes and you do not use your computer for 10 minutes. In this case, Norton AntiVirus identifies your computer as idle after 10 minutes. You can specify Idle Time Out for a period of 1 minute to 30 minutes. The default duration is 10 minutes.

After you specify the duration, you can view the Idle Countdown bar in the Norton Tasks window to confirm the idle state of your computer.

Found at Help Solutions by clicking here

As I stated early I do not use the Power Options hence the settings are already at Never.

I've been pretty much non stop on my PC since the last Idle Scan turned off my PC. I will take a break and let a Idle Scan run to see what happens. In exploring since last Idle Scan turn off, I have tweaked the General/Other Setting Power Saving Mode which to me doesn't make sense at all....lol

Furhter what seems to be getting missed by people here is that the Idle Scan is a default scan that is installed at set up and basically is controlled with limited tweaks in the Settings/General/Norton Tasks UI.

burner, pardon me joining in but I've never heard of the behavior you're describing before this. A thought occured to me that the machine may not be 'shutting off' but instead is crashing during the idle scan. Have you checked your system logs to see if anything is noted there? Also, please look in your machine's advanced system settings at the settings under Startup and Recovery and inspect the Automatically restart value.

Reese as stated in my 1st post observations, it’s NAV Idle Scan as I was sitting right there.

Regards senthilkumar's second screenshot, the panel prior to that screenshot offers 5 different types of "default" scans, each customizable to an extent, each undeletable.  A truly custom scan, created by user, would be deletable.  The first two "default" scans, full and quick, offer the option to turn off the PC after the scan.

If it pleases burner, can we claim those options are to stay on after the scan?

Sorry, I had forgotten about your previous comment saying, "pop up window saying Norton has finished it's idle scan and will shut down the PC in x minutes".

This is not an area of the product that I'm familiar with but I do know that this feature of shutting down after a scan is new this year for the NIS/NAV products. My machine runs the idle scan frequently and I've never seen this behavior. This leads me to think that some installation setting may have been messed up. I don't see anywhere that you've reinstalled and I hate suggesting it but perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling will solve the problem.

It's my understanding the setting you are referring to have nothing to do with Idle Scans. Note in the 1st image below that the Quick Scan is not checked "On". Further notice in the 2nd image that if the Quick Scan was checked "On" the PC would "Stay on"

Again, the Default Idle Scan is seperate from the settings everyone keeps referring to in the Scan Now or Scans UI. The only settings that refer to the Default Idle Scan settings are found in Settings/General/Norton Task Settings

Hi,

I have faced similar situations where the computer freezes and looks like the scan did it.. But actually, it did not..

This could be one such situation. That was the reason I asked you in the previous post about the sleep mode.

Could you stop the screensaver from loading when idle, computer's display going off ? Reboot the computer once and let the computer do an idle scan?

Regards,

Prithiviraj S

I have a feeling you might be right as I upgraded online from NAV 2011 to NAV 2012. Hence the upgrade maybe didn't copy the settings of the 2011 Default Idle Scan correctly.

The problem I have is it means de and re installing 2011 3 user pack and upgrading online 2012 3 user pack. I'm going to babysit this a bit more in the hope it maybe is a running in issue or the changing of the General/Other Setting Power Saving Mode did have some impact.......doesn't make sense at all....lol

NOTE that there is only a 2012 3 user pack if you renew as if you buy there is only a 5 user pack. Also, why in the heck is the Canadian dollar not at par?
