Norton AV blocks DLNA

I'm using Windows 7 (64) Pro (WMP 12) with Norton AV 2011 (18.5.0.125) trying to stream music to my DLNA certified Sony TV.  If I un-install the Norton, the TV finds the Windows Media Player 12 (which is setup properly for DLNA streaming) and streams the music.  But if Norton is installed the TV can't find it.  In Network Security Map,  I setup the TV as a trusted device.  Still no luck.  Any ideas or work arounds?

Thanks for responding AllenM.

Yes, I have Norton Antivirus.  I tried turning off the Windows firewall, if Norton is installed, it still won't connect.  The TV will connect if Norton is un-installed, therefore the router firewall isn't the issue.  The TV connects whether the Windows firewall is On or Off as long as Norton AV is un-installed.

Any other ideas?

How odd.

Keep Windows Firewall off and we'll try to determine if one of the modules is interfering.

Turn off all the switches on the NAV interface and see if DLNA is working.

If it is, turn on the switches one by one and see if is working after each one.

Try turning off  "Intrusion Prevention"

I turned off everything,  left Windows Firewall off, TV still doesn't see the Windows Media Player DLNA Server.

If I un-install Norton AV (without rebooting) it still doesn't work.  After the reboot (with Norton un-installed) the TV see the Media player and can stream music.  If I re-install Norton (but before rebooting) it still sees it.  After the reboot, it can't see it.

Hi wileewildfire,

This is very strange I have to admit.

You mentioned before that you set up your TV as a trusted device. Did you set it up as Network Trust or Full Trust? If not already, try setting it up as Full trust and see if anything changes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Where do I set it for Full Trust, remember this is Norton Antivirus, not Internet Security.  I can only put it in the Trust Control of Network Security Map.

HI wileewildfire,

Sorry, you are correct. When I saw the reference to network security map, my mind just geared automatically to NIS.

I am not sure what to make of this.

When you said in an earlier post that you tried to turn OFF everything in NAV, what does this mean? Did you turn OFF auto-protect? If not, try this but as a precaution disconnect from the Internet first.

If it does not make a difference straight away then restart your computer while auto-protect is still OFF and see if there is any change.

You could also try this with the other settings but again be disconnected from the Internet until you have everything re-enabled again.

Best wishes.

Allen

This could be related to the Network Security Map, due to the way it installs a bit differently than other Norton components.  Make sure the device is added to the list in the Map and that, if the connection is wireless, you are using encryption.

wileewildfire did indicate in the opening post that the device was added. Of course wileewildfire has to make sure to remember and add it again after reinstalling NAV. :smileywink:

I turned off all the protections( Insight, Antivirus, Antispyware, SONAR, Intrusion, Email, Browser, and Download Intelligence), then rebooted, they were still off, TV still couldn't find the server.  I turned off Windows firewall, still no luck.   The TV added to the list and is hard wired to the router, as is the computer.

Can you ping the TV in the current state?

Start -> cmd -> Type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

You can get the ip address from the NSM under IP Address.

Can you also go through your History to see there's anything of interest. I think Recent History should be enough to go through.

I think Symantec should probably intervene on this issue now.

I can ping it, even with Norton installed and everything turned on.  It's the TV that can't see the computer.   Nothing suspicious in History.

How do I get Symantec involved?

Hi wileewildfire,

I will send a message to Symantec and ask them to take a look at this thread.

Best wishes.

Much appreciated Allen!

Hi wileewildfire,

I have sent you a private message

As an update, it looks like wileewildfire is using a vpn while trying this. Everything works with just NAV or just the vpn but if both are enabled the problem occurs.

I have a similar problem. I have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and Windows Media Player 12. Before installing NIS version 17.8.0.5 I was able to stream videos off this machine to my Sony Bravia TV. It was one of the reasons I bought that model TV.

Let me apologize in advance for the tone of this message. I think anyone reading this can easily tell how very angry and frustrated I am.

Now the TV cannot even see the media stream service on the PC. It works great with another server running a linux media server. But I need to be able to play streams from this Win7 machine because this is where I can record video for later playback.

I have unplugged my router from the Internet and turned off all features in NIS and Windows firewall. I've gone through the menus on the TV and "Refresh All Internet Content" and "Troubleshoot Media Servers" and "Test Media Servers" and "Show/Hide Media Servers-->Refresh List" and more. No dice. And yes, I can easily ping my TV from any PC in my local network, including this Win64 box.

I have followed all the troubleshooting instructions in this message thread and have been following other clues  for the last several weeks. I have opened all the ports that have been recommended to me by others. Included are:

Inbound  Netbios local subnet

Inbound  UPnP Discovery port 1900 TCP and UDP

In/Out    TCP 554 and 1755 TCP+UDP local subnet

In/Out    UPnP 5223 TCP local subnet

In/Out    3478-3479, 3658 UDP local subnet

In/Out    SSDP 2861-2871, 1900,1901, 50000, 50002, 8200, 8201, local subnet

I have all these general rules moved up ahead of the blocking rules.

I have the IPSec Policy Agent service turned off and disabled.

I am starting to conclude that NIS is broken with respect to DLNA and no one at Symantec really knows how to fix it. I've heard some solutions suggested that were about as good as sacrificing a chicken and didn't address the problem.

Do I have to discard this product or is there really a solution to this problem?

Please help.
