Norton Backup first time use

I'm planning on reinstalling W10 on my computer so I'm preparing to insure that my data is backed up.  I'm setting up Norton Backup to an external drive.  I see that I can select "My Document" as a data source. If I interpret this correctly, only data in the My Documents folder and sub-folders will be backed up.  (since I have data on the Desktop, I'll make a folder under My Documents for  these items prior to running the backup).  Is this correct?

Once the new W10 is installed and I've reinstalled Norton, I'll run "recovery".  Am I correct in my understanding that the recovery will put all the backed up data back on the computer in the same file and folder format that it was when I created the backup?  That would seem logical to me.  Is this correct?

As this is my first time using the Norton Backup program.....are there any tips I should know to make this an uneventful experience?

Thanks.

A quick and easy way would be to just copy the files and folder you need to keep to the external drive.

But using the Norton 360 Backup feature you can add and exclude individual files and folders. See this Norton Support article

Then you can use the information in this Support article to restore the files after you have reinstalled Windows.

The only suggestion I would make is to create the backup set you wish to back up. Then do a test restore  before doing the Windows reinstall. That way you know the backup was successful. You can choose to restore to a different location for this test.
