Norton Backup Not Backing Up Selected files

It appears that the backup process within Norton 360 Premier is not backing up fiels and resetting the archive attribute.  As a test I created a word doc in a folder (My WEB Sites - in MY Documents).  Have added /verified that the appropriate folder is in my backup - and verified that ms docuemnts is selected on the right.  Have also added *.html and *css to other documents in the backup.  After my scheduled backup runs - check the files and no GREEN check mark in the lower left corner (option to place check mark is ON).  File properties show file is ready to be archive.  Viewed backup listing - some files are backed up soewm are NOT.  How is this fixed?  When I talk to 'support'  they keep telling me files are backed up.  When I show that THEY ARE NOT backed up - they suggest wait for a day or two and they will call me back to verify.  After 4 weeks still waiting for phone caLL back. What is anotehr backup solution besides Microsoft?

Thanks

Hi Jimn.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you have your backup configured?  Have you selected "C" and included/excluded files and folders or have you selected "My Documents" and selected some or all of the file types on the right hand panel?  How many backup sets do you have?

Have you gone to "Restore files" to see if the file appears to be in the backup?

Are you saying that the new .html and .css files were backed up, and it was just the .doc that does not appear to have been?  If so were they all in the same directory?

There are lots more questions I might ask but I will wait until you respond to these, or someone else comes up with an answer for you.

All the best.

Yes I have 'C' selected as well as my documents.  The css, html and doc are in the same folder.  Since I can't send in screen shots is there any other documentation I can send in?

Hi,

Here's some help on sending/posting screen shots

http://community.norton.com/t5/Forum-Feedback/Forum-Tip-How-to-post-screenshots-in-the-forum/td-p/254415

Am I reading correctly that you are trying to backup all of your "C:\" drive plus some folders?

Keep us posted

Trying to back up just the DATA folder and ALL of it's subfolders and files on the 'C' as well as MY DOCUMENTS.  Inserting screen shots.  The green check mark IS NOT on SOME files in MY WEBSITE folder under MY Documents.

Hello again Jimn.

I must admit that I am puzzled as to what is happening.

However, if you are just trying to backup a Data folder and everything in My Documents then I would suggest that you uncheck "My Documents" and use the "Add or exclude files and folders" option at the bottom of the right hand pane under Manage Backup sets "What" to ensure that those two folders and nothing else are included.  Try this as a new backup set, run it and see if what you want is backed up, it should be.

Personally I would also uncheck all the boxes on the right hand pane if using the files and folders option as that will leave N360 in not doubt that you want everything in those folders backed up.

Does that make sense?

Created a new backup set (test) that had everything unchecked (except for a the "C" for a source) and included folders C:\DATA and JIM/MY DOCUMENTS.  Did a preview.  The preview showed my documents but NO MY WEB SITES.  Went from MY SCANS to NERO (see norton4.jpg).  Modified TEST backup set to included JUSt MY DOCUMENTS - same results after a preview (norton5.jpg).  If i talk to Norton suppport they jsut give the run-around and never really address the problem.

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jimn.

I continue to be puzzled.

Not a solution I admit but have you thought about trying to specifically include the relevant folder and see what happens then?

Yup - Created a test backup set with JUST that one folder selceted and a preview shows just a ini file being backed up.

Thanks Jimn.

Any chance that you can post a screen shot of this?

I will draw this to the attention of the Norton team.  No promises of a solution but as far as I can see you seem to have shown that there is something odd going on and the responses you have received appear less than comprehensive.

Watch this space but do not hold your breath.

Finger crossed and good luck.

Screen shots inserted as requested.

Thanks for ANY attention that Support will give.

Requested screen shots below.  Any attention you can get from support would be appreciated.

They take a while to appear since images go through moderation so be patient.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work but what happens when you manually add the folder:

C:\Users\Jim\Documents\My Websites

I'm not in windows 7 at the moment, it's possible you may need to change your view settings in order to get to that location.

The reason why I suggest that is because in your screenshot of the folder location, that is not the "real" location of your data.

There really is no such thing as "My Documents" in windows 7 and "Libraries" is not a real folder, it's a symbolic link.

Another suggestion would be to go into "Computer" and browse the "Norton Backup Drive".

You may be able to browse into the true location and see if the files really are getting backup up or not.

Dave,

I have coipied the my web sites to c:\DATA\...  and used that location for my backup source.

Jim

Just an update Jimn.

The team are trying to replicate the problem.  If I hear any more I will let you know.

Thanks for the update.  If they can't replicate the problem i would be up for them to connect to my laptop - if that helps.

Hello Jim

I've sent you a Private Message asking for few info. You can access it by clicking on the List Private Messages  icon in the upper right hand corner of the page.

This will help us to solve your issue

Thanks

Kavitha

Jimn -

I've been trying diligently to reproduce your issue, but I am unsuccessful in doing so. I'm running N360 v20.3.1.22 on Win7-64. No matter what I do, all files get backed up. The only way I can get it to NOT back-up a file in there (in my case, they were all weblinks, .URL files) is by adding a file type exclusion of .URL files.

If you want - let's schedule a time where you can remote into my laptop and I'll show what i'm seeing/experiencing.
