Norton Bootable Recovery Tool for NIS 2010

Also NRD2009 when it was working under subscription scanned more. While maybe the dl of 2010 is a bit borked, a copy that burns, burn validated,  and loads successfully shouldn’t have any errors that would effect scanning. I’ve worked enough in IT to know that. but who knows eh?

Seems like the NBRT for NIS2010 does not work.  File size does not match description.  Should be around 291MB.  Actual download is around 250MB.  It is a valid .iso file and will burn to a cd - but will not boot without crashing.  Tried multiple downloads/burns and tested on multiple machines.  Crashes every time.  Downloaded direct from FTP site & (same resulting link) from symantec web page:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/globalmaps/recoverytool.jsp

It would be nice to have a reliable boot disk.

Please flag this issue for Symantec employees to check.

Thanks.

Thanks for the clarification.

Can't help you with anything more specific so hang on for others who can.

It is also possible that the philosophy behind the Recovery Disk is not the same as an installed version.

Hi rustybucket et al,

for what it's worth...I'm having same issue w Recovery Tool

I tried > ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/recovery/nis/

I tried > http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/globalmaps/recoverytool.jsp

looks like 300B and only get 250MB

Also, tried IE8 and FF3.5 on my Vista HmPr SP2

No luck for me either

Have you found solution since your 9/28/09 Forum post...

Regards

bjm_

The issue is being checked into by Symantec.  We will be notified when they have corrected to files.  There is nothing wrong on your end.

I just tried both of the links that bjm_ posted and they both downloaded the full file at 305,620,992 bytes.

I am checking the download now.  If you have a chance, can you burn the file and see if it boots properly?  You are the first one I have heard of getting the 305+MB download.

Actually, 305,620,992 bytes (291mb) is exactly the size of the download I got (see message 6). It burned properly and operated properly, so I believe that is the size that everyone should be receiving.

Can you provide us with the exact IP address?  Others are going to the same sites and getting a 251MB download even though it says the file is 291/305MB.  Thanks.

I just burned it and booted it successfully. It downloaded the latest definitions and was scanning fine. It even recognized my product key so i didn't even have to enter that. It was already there. This is the link I used (posted above):

An added note: It did seem like it froze when it first came up with the white screen. It was accessing my 3 /12 floppy for a good 5 minutes before it moved on and then loaded fine after that.

It reconized your product key?  How can it do that?  It's not supposed to access the hard drive until after you tell it to scan.  Hmm.

Also, that link leds me back to the same places I've been.  (Never mind the question of location; just saw your profile and this is an even bigger mystery now.)  Time for some Symantec input on this issue.

I found the key after the floppy wait time. I am in the USA (Iowa) and English is the language. Where are you located?

It finds your current key and auto fills it in at the eula agreement screen

That's the same URL that I used. Also, after booting, it recognized my product key. I did not begin a scan.

For the sake of clarity, note that 305,620,992 bytes = 291mb (base 2), not 305mb.

Correct for me too although if you read the HELP file inside the NRT it mentions every possible way of finding your KEY but does not say it will find it and fill it in!

Still needs a bit of fine tuning.

huwyngr,

I was a bit surprised when it picked up the product key with no user intervention, but it worked that way on both a XP SP3 system and a Vista SP2 system. I never looked at the help file. If it doesn't mention auto detection, it should.

I posted this on  another Recovery Tool thread, but thought I would also post here, in case it benefits someone else.

I have been able to get the tool to run from a burned disc which previously had thrown an error message. The fix for me was elementary and I am embarrassed I had not thought of it sooner.

I cannot follow the directions on the page:

1) Insert the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool CD in the CD-ROM drive.

2) Exit all programs and restart your computer.

I had to run the tool from a cold start - not a restart. When I go that route, everything works as advertised. The product code was picked up, updates gathered and I was able to run a successful scan.

Interesting though, that the NIS 2009 disc will work via the restart method.

Phil,

Good catch! As it happens, that's what I did on both systems, but only by happenstance.

Phil,

I don't hink that is the full story since I've always started Ollie 3 -- my test bed for this -- from cold with the created disk .

My just now downloaded ISO was a different size, larger.

And in any case I would say youd did follow the instructions since doing (2) is what I call "restart" since it implies starting again from a running computer.

FWIW -- I'm running it again to check the timings and the updating. Exactly 6 minutes to the WIndows wallpaper. 7:15 to Languages.

Much quicker this time.

I think the Undo file goes to a different location than HELP says. I'll check at the end.
