Norton Bootable Recovery Tool for NIS 2010

Mine worked from a restart. I did not turn off the computer. I just rebooted as it said to do.

Hello dbrisendine...et al,

The issue is being checked into by Symantec.  We will be notified when they have corrected to files.  There is nothing wrong on your end.

I read your recent post that your download was larger ....[....]

May I have something wrong at my end as I am unable to download 300MB...only 250MB from posted links ?

That's the issue I was getting at.  I finally did get the 291MB download but I had to use a downloader to do so.  Some users are not having a timeout issue with the FTP server and some are.  If you can, try using FireFox to download and / or a free download accelerator.  The full file (291MB) seems to run fine once burned as an ISO image  but I (and others) was having trouble downloading the file.

I used Internet Download Manager to download it. That might be the reason it downloaded fine for me all those times.

dbrisendine

Thanks for the info re timeout issue with the FTP server...I tried download via FF ~ 250MB....

I'll find a free download accelerator / downloader and try again.

Now that I know issue is on my end...I'll get it done.

Thanks

bjm_,

Fresh Download is a good free downloader.

Let me know if you still can;lt get it and I wikll upload the file to my server and help you get it that way.

Hi Boofo

Thanks for the link....re Fresh Download

I run Vista.

Fresh Download ver 8.34  dated 09/09 (http://www.softsea.com/review/Fresh-Download.html) does not include Vista?

bjm_

bjm_,

I would say try it as it should work on Vista also. But if it doesn’t, there is Internet Download Manager (the one I use) but it is not free. You can do the 30-trial though. That should get you what you need. I recommend IDM, as it is the best as far as I am concerned. Well worth the money in the long run.

Just FYI that I know first-hand this issue is being looked at internally. This thread will be updated when we have more information to offer.

I'd like to thank everyone for providing all of the valuable information so far.

I'm guessing Symantec assumes you would automatically want the newest, latest, greatest, etc.  Seems impossible to find an updated link to any of the older versions of several pieces of Symantec software.  I still have valid links to download the NIS2009 version.  They are still the old 16.5 version - not the promised update to 16.7.  The download links worked for a few days with 16.7.2.10 - but due to all of the issues they reverted back to 16.5 and never posted the latest 16.7.  NIS2010 was released - so the NIS2009 seems forgotten.  Probably the same with the NBRT-NIS2009.

RustyBucket

Hi rustybucket,

So, what's your impression then...

Is NBRT NIS09 really NBRT NIS10 or is NBRT NIS10 really NIS09 or ?

The page that opens does not state the product it applies to....the tech writer might have considered that I don't have the key to decipher the ID code.

Does NBRT NIS10 work for 10/09 ????  Does NBRT NIS09 work for 09/10 or ?

Regards

bjm_

Why ruin a good story with the truth?   94.5% of all statistics are made up.

bjm_;

I never checked both NIS09/NIS10 options before.  You are correct - they lead to the same place - with no reference to which version you are looking at.  Not sure why they give you the option to select between the two.  Once again - Symantec just points you to the latest product.  The NBRT2010 does have newer "features" and does catch more malware than the NBRT2009 does.  Keys for 2009 & 2010 work just fine on the NBRT2010.  Never tried to use a 2010 key on the NBRT2009 - don't know.  The NBRT2009 is still on the FTP site if really needed.

That was a good spot about the document ID -- not the first time it has happened and Norton usually correct it although I gather that with multiple servers scattered around the world this is not always as easy as it might sound. I did notice that the Last Revision date shows 09/15/09 which is the official release date for 2010.

On the question of what do they cover -- in the past they have always been cumulative and indeed if you go to the NIS 2009 removal tool it tells you:

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer. Before you continue, make sure that you have the installation CDs or downloaded installation files for any Norton products that you want to reinstall. If you have pcAnywhere or WinFAX, uninstall it using Add or Remove Programs before running the Norton Removal Tool. Also, if you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases and uninstall those products.
in a yellow box at the top. But this did not appear on the 2010 page I've been going to normally.
But following a different route:
Support > 10 Best > Other > and then navigating from here:
it brings up a list of Framework problems specific to 2010
and that solution document tells you to get the Download tool and does contain the magic words:
The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2010/2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.
Which answers your question and confirms what I'd understood has always been the case -- in fact it's a reason why one should not store and reuse a NRT later -- Norton do modify them as the installed programs change.
Obviously one should not have to go to that length to know but don't lambast me -- I'm just the messenger!
BTW That last document ID is:
DOCID: 20090828144925EN
Operating System: Windows Vista,Windows XP
Last modified: October 5, 2009
so it is very recently edited.
Needless to say I'm sure that Norton will make the change to the original document we have been finding unless there is some reason not to include that statement. I can't think of one in view of the needed warning.

Hi huwyngr,

Your detailed post strengthens and points to the specific issue with Norton Bootable Recovery Tool ~ NBRT.

The technical writers for the NBRT have omitted the product information....so, the user ( as rustybucket / bjm_  have posted ) is left to assume facts not in evidence.

As you (huwyngr) point out other Tools annotate product information.

All I was offering is that product information should be annotated for the NBRT ( so, I don't have to assume...)

bjm_

Well well.  A problem downloading the NBRT, huh?  I tried this with IE/FF browsers and an FTP client and got the same results (250 MB instead of 291).  Download rate was slow in all cases (around 240 Kbps).

Edited:

I forgot one other thing:  during the download process, 291 MB was slated as the download size, but as it approached 245 MB, the download was terminated.

Hi mdoc7

welcome to the NBRT NIS10 thread...nice image!

for some it will and for some it won't....for me it won't ~ IE8 / FF w/wo add-on Download Managers.

Thanks, bjm.

OK, now I'm able to download via FTP client the NIS NBRT, burn it, and verify it boots properly from CD.  It doesn't auto-find my key, and that's where I exited.

Just earlier than that, I did the same thing with NAV NBRT with the same results, except that I didn't boot off the CD to check it.

The received size of the NIS NBRT is 298.5 MB.  The NAV one is the same size.

The transfer speed that I reported earlier doubled this time around.  Too slow for my tastes.

What if you were to turn off the Smart Screen filter?

Where is it?

I just completed another NBRT download test via FTP client, which failed.  The filesize is again at 251 MB.  I believe the issue is the FTP site, not the file.  BTW, at that time the transfer speed dropped to what it was before.
