Norton Bootable Recovery Tool for NIS 2010

Where is it?

I noticed it in your screenshot. Just curious.

The smart screen is in IE safety button.  It doesn’t effect FTP downloads.

You are absolutely right and the additional information seems valuable to this non-techie.

BTW Dave Coleman's posting is a good sign. I've actually met him at the Culver City unit and he is a good one to have the attention of!

I agree about the slowness -- seems a general characteristic of Norton's servers for specialized downloads.

A number of us have been getting the 245 download and they definitely do not work; some of us getting the larger download find it works and some of us find it does not ....

The worst of things to troubleshoot.

I would think that might be a different situation to whether it boots up and does the job. What happens if you input the key manually at that point?

From what little I understand of the contruction of the NRT -- I've examined a few downloads with ISOBuster -- it uses a WIndows PE environment.

I also use the bootable CD version of Acronis Disk Director and True Image and they use a LINUX environment.

One thing that is odd about my experience with it on a new all SATA PC I'm finishing off that uses a motherboard and AHCI, not IDE, in the SATA controller is that if I tell it to boot to the "Full" versions they fail with a can't find hard drives error while if I boot to what they describe as the "Safe" version they run OK. I think I was told that the Safe environment was LINUX and I wonder if the Acronis Full environment is by any chance Windows PE ?

Do you know anything about these differences and whether that might explain failure to boot for some people when they get the 298MB download?

FWIW

When I booted off the NBRT last time, I didn't have the product key in hand.  This time, I booted off it again and entered it.  The key is from my confirmation email (it was a download purchase, not a store-bought package), and on-screen input for the product key was in five boxes of 5 chars each (total 25 chars). The key from the confirmation email was called a license key and was 25 chars long, but not grouped in 5 chars.  I had to count out 5 chars and put a slash mark at every 5th character.

So I inputted the key and I got an error box saying the product key isn't valid.  So much for that.

You're right in that the NBRT uses a WinPE environment.  Says so in the help file.  I have a SATA PC also, but I'm not familiar with your experience.  Can't answer your question about the Acronis Full env. either.

edit: and my confirmation email didn't show the product key... only the license key.  But after the program help file point me to the Norton Account link, I went there and saw again my license key, but it was named the "product key."  If this key should be valid for the NBRT... why then would the key be invalid?

Thanks -- I wasn't expecting help with the Acronis situation -- just tossing it into the melting pot.

Can't help on the KEY but in my experience elsewhere Norton will put in the dashes in a continuous string. I try to keep my keys on a simple file I can pull up and Swipe / CTRL + C copy and then just paste into the box.

Hi huwyngr

Thanks for the alternate info source link

I searched Norton Bootable Recovery Tool NIS10 ~ No results

I searched Norton Bootable Recovery Tool ~

I searched Bootable Recovery Tool ~

the only associated link open to a page that only annotates product NIS... not version.

DOCID: 20080612122232EN
Operating System: Windows Vista,Windows XP
Last modified: September 8, 2009

So, for other Tools and specific problems the tech writers include product and version info...

for the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool ...the user must still assume facts not in evidence...

How would I know based on Sept 8, 2009  if Recovery Tool is for 09/10 or ?

The Last modified: info applies to when the doc was modified.  Not necessarily the Tool.

As I said I don't think you can tell just by the date and I would expect them to modify the text of the document to include the same yellow box in 2010 as the do in 2009 and earlier..

I would not ecpect them to include a date in the title since it has been cumulative in the past and I suspect still is. But I'm sure we will learn.

hello huwyngr

thanks for your continued courteous patience with me...

I was (somewhat) confused by your earlier informational post (10/06/09) in this thread re Norton Removal Tool and Service Framework as this thread is re Norton Bootable Recovery Tool.  Sometimes, I am slow to comprehend and quick to assume.

Guess, I was trying to fit square peg in round hole....expecting all doc's to always be presented in a Norton standardized format similar to the Norton Removal Tool doc.   Reasonable ...but, Unrealistic.

Guess, I was blaming my 250MB download issue on the doc.  If the doc was lacking in a standardized presentation format then the associated download app would be somehow lacking (250MB vs. 300MB).

As was pointed out ...the troubleshooting becomes an issue when for some it will and for some it won't.

I was trying to find the correct doc page and link that will allow 300MB... thinking issue is server side... as FTP server timeout suggests server side.  Maybe my transfer rate is just too slow so FTP server times out.

You and others have pointed me to downloaders suggesting issue is user side.  I have tried two FF add-on downloaders with 250MB results. No change from FF built in downloader.

Thank you again for your continued patient courteous support...seems silly for me to get frustrated over this issue while others are experiencing Infections and Product Install difficulties.

as always respectfully submitted

Actually you are not the only one to be confused! I was the one who mixed the two NRT items which is why they put the B in the Recovery Tool!

Sorry about that.

In haste .....

There is another anomalous characteristic in the FTP site, and it's happened twice in the downloading of the NBRT ISO file.  The pix here tells the story:

Look at the last line.  The story is:  "I have received the entire file, but the transmission is not completed and not terminated."  The "Left" column (time left) has reached zero, yet the transfer is still taking place and the size of the file is still increasing.

The second to last line tells the same story: the file size continued to grow until I manually stopped the transmission, at a filesize of 581.51 MB.

There's something wrong in the flow control communication or in the handshaking protocol used.

At this writing, the transmission in the last line concluded its transmission on its own with a filesize of 490.44 MB.  I don't think that's the correct size.

We have done some internal testing using a different location for the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool ISOs. Please find URLs below for each of the supported product versions:

Norton 360 v3: http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/upgrade/NSS/ISO/NBRT_N360_STANDARD_Retail.iso

NAV 2010 (Retail purchase): http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/upgrade/NSS/ISO/recovery_nav_x86.iso

NIS 2010 (Retail purchase): http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/upgrade/NSS/ISO/recovery_nis_x86.iso

NAV/NIS 2010 (Online purchase): http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/upgrade/NSS/ISO/NBRTSOS.iso

We are also looking into the cause of the original problem and will post an update once our investigation is completed.

Thanks, I’m grabbing the NIS ISO from there.

Gary,

Thanks for the update.  Downloaded NIS file - no problems!  Saved OK / Burned OK / Boots OK / & even Updates OK.  Also noted .iso image size has changed.  Now includes updated defs to 10/03/09.  Not sure if servers had extra traffic - but download was even slower than the original ftp site link.  Started faster but soon came to crawl.  ZZZzzzzzz

Thanks again.

Rusty

Thanks for the feedback. It could have been server traffic, we'll keep an eye on that. Glad the ISO downloaded and burned etc... correctly.

Regards

Gary

When I downloaded this, it was 3 times faster than at the FTP site.

I also had nary a problem with the ISO.  The earlier ISO downloads from FTP were all corrupt.  Received filesize is 300.5 MB

The recovery_nis_x86.iso file from the link above is 2 MB bigger than the one I downloaded from one of the earlier links. And is was not corrupt as I burned it, and it ran fine. So they were not ALL corrupt. Just for some people.

Yes, thanks garyt.  The file downloads correctly from the new links whereas from the FTP it was always kind of hit and miss for me and others.  Definitely seems to be a server issue.  Thanks for the help though.
