I just installed Norton Systemworks Basic and Norton Internet Security. I have been setting things up (settings) and running scans. I clicked on Custom Cleanup and saved the cookies that I want it to not delete (3 or 4 cookies). I closed this and clicked on Norton Cleanup. It begins by loading my favorite web sites and gives a number of 406 loaded. It continues cleaning. Then I click Norton Cleanup Options, because I want to unclick under cookies most of the sites. They don't have simple logins and nothing to remember next time. When I clicked on Saved Web Sites tab, I took a step back. It listed web sites that is deffinately not in my favorites. Some addresses are numerical, some numerical and leters, some have names anti this , some are clearly adult sites. Now some of the sites listed are from my favorites list. But mostly are not.
I tried the online chat and the first agent by the name of Abhishek bounced me to another agent by the name of Debasis. Debasis said that Norton stores these urls for my protection. That it was safe to have these listed. I asked the agent if Norton was saving cookies from these sites on my computer safe and how did they get there. The agent said that was part of Norton and that the program saved these sites. Some of them could be load when I visit other sites. .......I knew now that this agent did not know nothing and was making things up...... So I said something like You mean that Norton has gained our trust and is now allowing malicious web sites and hackers to gain entry into my computer......etc..... And the agent simply replied again Yes Norton does this for your protection......................................I just simply closed the chat box.
Now I know that aint true. (is not true)
While I was waiting to chat I tried to actually count the number of saved urls in my favorites list and I came to a number of 270. But scanning this list I don't think all of the favorites are there. I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 all updates. Internet Explorer 6.0.29...Service Pack 3. I previously had Norton 360 (hated it) completely uninstalled. ISP is Earthlink
Some of the domains listed are: 007guard.com 008i.com 008k.com ...... 1001-search.info 100888290cs.com 100sexlinks.com 10sek.com ..... 1sexparty.com 1stantivirus.com 1stpagehere.com ..... Antispionage.com Antispionagepro.com Antispywaresuite.com Antispyweb.net Antiver2008.com Antiworm2008.com Antiwurm2008.com Backstripgirls.com ........adultcodec-2008.com adultcodecstars.com adultfilmsite.com adultgambling.org
.......... and on and on and on.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.
It’s me again. I have tried everything that I can think of. I have tried to delete all the temp files, index files, cleaned out java temp files, cleaned out shockwave/flash files, etc. Norton Cleanup is still picking up these urls from somewhere. Where I don’t know. Norton Antivirus is coming up clean. Adaware 08 and Spybot is coming up clean. Trojan Remover is coming up clean. I have tried everything that I can possibly imagine. Does Norton Cleanup get its’ information from anywhere other than favorites and cookies? Any information would be much appriciated.
It should only come from favorites. What browsers do you have installed? Do you have anything other than IE? Do you have other user accounts on the system? I would recommend checking out the favorites of your other system user accounts. It's possible one of the users on the system might have these items listed.
I only have Internet Explorer version 6.0.2900.5512.xpsp.080413-2111 . There is a total of three personal accounts on this system. I have examined all the urls saved in the favorites in all three accounts. These extra items are not in any of the favorites. It is interesting to note that I tried the norton cleanup on the other two accounts and norton only loaded what was in the favorites of those accounts and nothing extra. So it is only this one account. I’ve tried everything under the sun that I can think of to remove this problem to no avial. Any other ideas would be greatly appriciated!
To make another note of one of the things that I have tried, I went in to each of the users and moved all of the favorites out of each users Favorites folder and into a temp file a piece on the desktop. I opened up Norton Cleanup Options and deleted 40 or so urls off of the list. I noted that some of the items deleted where legitimate urls from the Favorites. Clicking apply and ok to close. I then ran Norton Cleanup. I went back into Norton Cleanup Options to find that the bad urls had came back, but the good urls did not. So it's not from the Favorites.
Yes Yes Yes!!!! I just checked on a hunch that I have had and have not been able to check on (meaning that I have been away from the computer). In internet explorer, I clicked on Tools menu. Then clicked on Internet Options. Clicked on Security tab and then under Restricted Sites. Clicked on Sites button. And BINGO!!! We now have an idea where Cleanup is getting these urls. I compaired the two list and they match.
But, now what???.....
To confirm, the list of items you found were under Restricted sites and not under the allowed sites, correct? Is there a reason why you have all of these items in restricted sites?
Hi Erik. To answer your question, the list is under Restricted sites. Nothing is under the allowed sites. And as for your second question, I have no idea where the Restricted sites list comes from. I have never added anything to this list so I have no clue. I would take a guess that Microsoft put these there? I have no idea. I still have no idea why Norton would be looking there anyway.? That was the closest thing that I could come up with. I have been racking my brains trying to find out way Norton Cleanup had and is picking up on these items. Any insight into this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Actually the default is to have nothing in that list. Manual addition or installing a program that updates that list are the only ways I know of. You should be fine emptying that list and seeing if Norton Cleanup still finds those items. I'm passing this along anyway.
Sorry it has been a while sence I wrote. I logged into the identity that has this problem and deleted all of the urls under IE Restricted Sites. I went into Norton Cleanup and deleted all of the urls it had there. I ran Cleanup and bam all of the urls were back. So I logged into the other two identities and went into Internet Explorer and deleted a large chunk from each. I logged back into the original identity and in Norton Cleanup removed that same chunk of urls. I ran Norton Cleanup and the urls came back again. I haven’t played with this anymore sense then. I will get back to it shortly. Just thought I better let you know something. Any more ideas from the team?
We're still investigating as well. Thanks for the update.

Hi tigerandrew,
I have sent you an email with some information we need. Thanks!
I have had the same issue.
Firstly I was told that Spybot was to blame for inserting the items into hosts file (and it did look like that). Host file was updated after removal of Spybot S&D to what it should be: 127.0.0.1 local host
Then I was told that IE is to blame since it is in their "default" items list.
All browser favorites, history, cookies, etc were removed.
All default websites were removed from IE.
Regisrty was corrected to remove those file names.
I have even had tech go ahead and reload the product.
They are still loading as favorite websites into One Button.
Hi tigerandrew,
Please see the email I've sent you, and reply with the requested files. This information will help us find the cause of the issue. Thanks!
I am having the same issue - has a resolution been found yet??
Thanks.
I am having the same problem. I am the only person who uses this machine and I have not heard of any of the sites on the list. There appears to be a large number with .it addresses. From Italy I suppose. This has made me question whether I should continue using Symantec products. Several months have passed since this was first reported an there appears to be no action.
Hi jblank94363 and tchefalo,
I've sent you an email requesting additional information. Please send that to me as soon as possible, and our team can look into this issue further. Thanks!
Tiger, I have found that with the tech support chat, there are some problems with of all thing, language semantics. Kind of ironic isn’t it? However, you will get good answers on here
