With NIS 2008 installed on both my and my wife's PCs (XP Home, SP2/3), the browser (IE7) very frequently gets hung up and must be aborted with Task Manager. This especially happens when I close the browser: the browser window contents are cleared, but the browser never exits. Again, I have to use Task Manager to end it.

I went into the "Manage Add-ons" settings for IE7 and disabled the item labeled "Norton Confidential". The browsers on both PCs now work without so many problems and exit normally.

Sure. LiveUpdate runs automatically and we always let it install the latest stuff.

I would suggest you do run LiveUpdate manually every once-in-a-while, un-less you have A.LU. on Express Mode.

Try to configure the Internet explorer for Norton personal firewall.

Open the Norton product>Click on the Norton Internet Security tab>Click settings>Click Norton Internet Security options> In the new window, click personal firewall>Click on program control> Now on the right pane, find out internet explorer or iexplorer.exe and change it to allow.

Also change Microsoft Generic host for win 32 to allow.

Do you use connect to internet through a wireless network?

That should help indeed.

Are you running 15.0 or 15.5?

How do you check the version? I find NIS's UIF to be a bit confusing in general -- not easy to find the settings & options that I'm looking for.

Also, in the firewall settings, exactly what does "Auto" mean? I can understand "Allow" and "Block", but am not sure how "Auto" works.

To retrieve the product version information, launch Norton Internet Security, click "Help & Support" and then click "About". A window will appear that has a General tab and a Norton Internet Security tab. Click the NIS tab to retrieve the product version.

I assume you are referring to the Program Control section of the Norton Internet Security options, which shows some rules for programs set to "Auto". Over the years, Symantec has evaluated how many programs interact with our products, and we have default settings for using these programs with our firewall. The "Auto" setting lets you take advantage of this information and sets up rules accordingly. If you were to select a program, and click "Modify" you would see the detailed rules that have been created for this program. "Auto" is a more detailed way to organize this information, since some programs are not cut-and-dry as "Allow" and "Block".

Let me know if you have other questions or concerns. Thanks!

Just an additional thing to try: make sure your Adobe Flash plugin is fully up-to-date.  I have seen some cases where older versions of the plugin (really old) can get hung up on some websites.

gordonwd,

Does this happen on a particular web site? Or does it happen on all web sites? If you can give us a URL where this happens consistently it will help us.

Thanks

Since taking veneeth’s advice above, I have not seen the problem occur in the last few days. When it was happening, it did not matter what web site you had been viewing. I generally have multiple tabs going in IE, and the hangup would only occur when I was trying to close the entire browser – not when I was actually accessing a particular site.
