Norton consuming 100% of my GPU

Sorry to create a new topic on this. This system will not allow me to add any additional replies to the “Nortonui.exe is usimgy my GPU” topic as I am still a new user. What a pain.

This issue for me has made my computer unusable. As soon as I open a youtube video and play it Norton will consume 100% of my GPU and stay there. I have disabled Auto-protect and Smart Firewall and Norton will still consume 100% of my GPU. I was able to get a tier 2 tech support person to see my issue, they uninstalled Norton (for the 3rd time) and on restart my GPU was normal. The tech proclaimed that my issue was resolved. Well, not so much, I loaded a video and 100% GPU usage hit. The tech took some more data and said they would escalate my issue to tier 3. One other interesting data point about this issue. I am a Firefox user and this ‘seems’ to be limited to Firefox. I have launched Chrome and the few times I have tried so far, the GPU does shoot up to 100% but after a few moments the GPU usage has gone back to low levels. I have only done this a few times so not sure if this is a pattern or a fluke.

Are the videos from YouTube? This might be related to the DeepFake scanning in 360. From the main 360 interface, click on Scam Protection and turn off DeepFake Protection.

I have that feature disabled and still Norton consumes 100% of my GPU. Oh, and the videos are youtube videos. I should also note that I have 3 other computers running Windows 11 and Norton 360. I have not seen this issue on those machines. They do have different hardware and the software installed on these machines is different (they have different uses so not all the same software is installed).

With the last update I too am having problems with accessing websites and music on YouTube. Mainly on Firefox, but I also got the issue on Vivaldi and Chrome but not as severe. I even put the website on exception lists and no change. I too uninstalled Norton and was able to access the sites easily. I also have another PC on Windows 11 Home, which I did NOT yet rebooted into the newest Norton update. I tested the websites on that PC and everything is fine. So IS there an easy way to BACK OUT the latest update? If not I will have to Uninstall Norton and get a different Anti Virus.

May be related? Are either of you running AI chat programs on your devices?

As a matter of fact I do. I am running Android Studio and using the builtin AI. I will have to shut down and try running without Android Studio running. I shut down Android Studio launched a video and Norton went to 100% of my GPU. Another update, I performed a full restart of the machine, and only started a browser and task manager. I loaded up Youtube, played a video and GPU maxed out. I also find it interesting that after killing the browser process the Norton GPU usage doesn’t go to zero. It stays at high % until I restart the computer.

Does disabling the Android Studio services and its AI in Windows Services and a reboot provide any relief?

SA

I don’t see anything in my services app or task manager and details in task manager that lists any of the apps that are reported as running with Android Studio. I will have to research this deeper to see if I can find these services and kill them. It still doesn’t make sense to me that this would cause Norton to peg the GPU. This still seems to be a problem with Norton.

Here is some better information for you regarding AS. It doesn’t have the customary windows services that can be stopped.

AI Overview

To stop Android Studio processes and background resources from running on Windows, you must disable the Gradle background daemon, stop inactive emulators, and disable unused IDE plugins, as Android Studio does not install traditional Windows System Services (services.msc). [1, 2, 3]

Here is how to disable the background processes that consume your system resources:

  1. Disable the Gradle Background Daemon

By default, the Gradle build tool leaves persistent java.exe daemon processes running in the background long after you close Android Studio. [1, 2]

  • Disable for your entire Windows profile:
    1. Press Windows Key + R, type %USERPROFILE%, and hit Enter.
    2. Open the .gradle folder (create it if it does not exist).
    3. Open or create a text file named gradle.properties.
    4. Add the following line to the file, then save it:

ini

org.gradle.daemon=false

Use code with caution.

  • Kill existing hung background daemons:
    1. Open Command Prompt.
    2. Run taskkill /f /im studio64.exe to kill any hung instances of the IDE.
    3. Run jcmd or check Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to find remaining java.exe processes and click End Process. [1, 2]
  1. Disable Background Cloud Services and Plugins

You can stop heavy built-in integrations (like Firebase, Google Cloud, and AI tools) from running background checks by disabling their respective Android Studio Service Integrations. [1, 2]

  1. Open Android Studio. [1]
  2. Go to File > Settings (or Ctrl + Alt + S).
  3. Click on Plugins in the left sidebar. [1]
  4. Select the Installed tab and uncheck services you do not use, such as:
  • Gemini / AI Assistant
  • Firebase Services
  • Google Cloud Tools [1]
  1. Click Apply and restart the IDE.

  2. Disable Automatic Device Mirroring & ADB

The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) often remains active in the Windows background to track physical or virtual devices. [1]

  1. Open Settings inside Android Studio (Ctrl + Alt + S).
  2. Navigate to Tools > Device Mirroring.
  3. Uncheck Activate mirroring when a device is connected.
  4. To shut down the ADB server completely when you are done coding, open Command Prompt and type:

cmd

adb kill-server

Use code with caution.

Thanks I will look at giving this a try. Right now, I am waiting for a call back from tier 3 tech support. They were supposed to call between 8 and 10 am today but with only 10 min to go, I am skeptical they are going to call.

So much for a tech support call during the window. It is now 2 hours later than the close of the call window and still no call. I have other solutions to this problem, which I guess I will have to take which is to remove Norton from the computer and go with a different product. I know Norton doesn’t care if I do that so this isn’t meant to be a threat. Just expressing frustration with Norton.

@Waukman Thanks for the post-back, I apologize for the frustration with this issue ongoing. I’m out of ideas for work around solution and even a possible solution at this stage.

@DML Same to you as well. To date I am not seeing this issue on any of my devices so therefore cannot duplicate it. Obviously Norton is conflicting with FF in some manner, of which we Guru’s are not privy to the manner of why or what the cause is. We are not employed by Norton and try our very best to help with the information we have in front of us.

No worries. I was hoping that Norton would want to take advantage of the fact that someone had a reproducible problem that they could debug. As a software developer/firmware engineer I know how hard it is to debug some of these situations. I was offering to help Norton but they don’t seem to want my help.

Norton er ved at kikke på fejlen men de tar det jo ikke som en 5min fejl de fixer det jo asp de kender nemlig fejlen så ta det rolig

TY for status update reply SoulAsylum….Reading other threads, I tried other suggestions but to no avail. I don’t run any AI, didn’t even install the Dark Web, tried stopping the firewall, limiting scan, etc…no change. So weird, since I don’t run anything special, a very basic PC setup on a Dell Desktop with Firefox. Used just to Access my bank website and running YouTube music seems blocked, not some other sites, especially if the landing page is basic, not fancy. Like I mentioned it confuses me more because an identical Dell desktop setup in the kitchen area runs all sites okay, but the Norton version is still on 26.4 vs the one in the back office which I upgraded to 26.5.

Anyway TY you for your attempt to help and TY to Waukman for posting.

Since no solution is at hand, I had to uninstall Norton and install another product and am now up and able to access my Billpaying website.

TY again and have a good day.

Glad to help!!
