Sorry to sound stupid, but how do i do that?

It can carry out a full scan without stopping but a quick scan always causes it to crash.

I would use the Norton Removal Tool.  Just type in “Norton Removal Tool” in to the Search box at the top-right-hand-side of this Web Page and Select the “Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool”.

Open your Norton Internet Security > Click N.I.S. tab > Settings > Norton Internet Security Options > Exclusions.

I would maybe try the N.R.T. first, though.  You get to re-install your Norton Product after you re-start your computer after using the N.R.T..

In the Transaction Security, Turn On the Crimeware Protection; this will not solve your Problem, it is just a Security Feature which is Turned Off when you install N.I.S., for some strange reason!

Why not try the easy way first?

After we can always use the Norton Removal Tool

Hi, i wrote SecurityRisk.URLRedir in the files to exclude section, ran a scan and it still crashed.

Shall i try the NRT? Whill that be any different from formatting and reinstalling NIS which i have already tried?

Hi all,

Sorry to ask a silly question ... isn't SecurityRisk.URLRedir a virus or some sort of nasty?

The removal instructions are here.  According to Symantec

"SecurityRisk.URLRedir is a detection for suspicious entries added to the hosts file.
The entries typically redirect security or operating system related URLs to the local host or to a malicious IP address. This technique is used to prevent access to security-related and operating system update sites."

You need to turn off windows restore - standard stuff when trying to clean house.  If you are having trouble booting in safe mode use MSCONFIG and edit boot.ini ...check safe mode.  This will force XP to start in safe mode and let you run the scan (theoretically).

I'm puzzled ... you have reformatted your drive.  Does this mean you also did a complete reinstallation of your operating system and programs?

If so, during the process, did you happen to use backup CD's / DVD's / floppies / USB sticks? Something does not add up ...

Reformatting *should* do the trick with most nasties excluding those which create hidden partitions. But I have found no info on this beastie to suggest it creates a hidden partition - and nothing to explain why you had difficulties.

See how you go with the Symantec Removal Instructions and please let us know how you go.

I can't see any purpose served in using the NRT just yet ...

Cheers.

(Pls remember to turn off system restore BEFORE you try to fix this)

Yes it is; however, since it does not happen with the Full System Scan suggests that the Quick Scan Scanner has an Error in it and also means that the User's system is Virus-free.

When i formatted my computer i did have to re-install all the software from CD’s including my norton

Follow my Steps and that should Resolve your Issue.

Hi, now i have generated a big problem. I used the Norton uninstall tool and unistalled norton, then installed it again, ran a scan and all seemed fine. I the went to live update and it went through the process got to i think installing the update and crashed. When i restarted my laptop it kept crashing on startup at the point where it is loading up norton. I tried 4 or 5 times and the laptop wouldn't load up. I maybe had other options but the only one i could think of was to format it because i couldn't do anything else. That is now done, i am just downloading service pack 2 because i don't think i can put norton on before that!

Now do i install norton from my CD or how do i get to the download since i cannot get to it through norton unistall since i do not have one to unistall now.

Also, will it crash again when i go to live updates?

Thanks

Install you Norton Product with your C.D..  If LiveUpdate crashes, do not re-start your computer; un-install then re-install LiveUpdate.  If this ()  does not work, try the Solution (below).

How to un-install and re-install LiveUpdate

My only problem with that is when it crashes the complete laptop freezes, no reponse from anything. My only way of getting round it is to press and hold the power button for a few seconds. Then i end up in a vicious circle.

I would suggest using the N.R.T. twice and then trying again.

If all else fails, re-store your computer back to a time it was working fine - or even back to the brand-new condition if this fails, which means you will have to install everything again.

I have just formatted the hard drive and installed everything from scratch, just starting with the Norton CD now.

I did do this yesterday though and it will either crash during live update or during a quick scan when it gets to SecurityRisk.URLRedir.

Do you suggest that once i have installed the cd i do try and run the live update?

I am unable to restore it to a time it has worked because i have had this problem since i tried installing norton a week ago and the fact that i have just formatted the hard drive.

You should always Run LiveUpdate first before doing anything else because, chances are, you will be At Risk until you do so.

If this does not work, then get your whole system clean again [brand-new condtion] and then only install Norton; let us know what happens.

Hi,

Here is what has happened,

Formatted computer - now all i have installed in windows xp software.

Installed Norton Internet Security 2008 - ran a quick scan all went fine.

Ran live update - Confirmed 24 updates installed - 2 failed.

The first that failed was "updates to symantic realtime storage protection files to version 10.2.2.6 - the install scrip was unable to launch a file it needed error 1812.

I tried to click on 'tech' and it completly froze, so didn't see the second it failed on.

Then i ran Live update again and it completed sucsessfully

Then ran a quick scan and it froze at SecurityRisk.URLRedir

Does this help at all to my problem?

And do i need to install the 'add on pack' from the cd?

If your scan is hanging on this type of infection, perhaps you might want to follow the Removal Instructions for SecurityRisk.URLRedir on the Symantec website.

Additionally, if you still thinkyour system is infected, I would recommend that you follow the steps listed in the How To Troubleshoot a Suspected Malware Infection announcement.

Since you have tried serveral Steps and this still happens, you may be Infected with SecurityRisk.URLRedir.

Follow Tony's instructions and that should Resolve your Issue; if not, let us know what happened.
