Norton Crashes when it reaches SecurityRisk.URLRedir

Hi, thanks for the ideas,

Firstly i ran live update and my system is up to date.

I then ran a full system scan and it froze at SecurityRisk.URLRedir.

Then i located the hosts file for suspicious enties but nothing is there as i have just formatted my hard drive.

I then downloaded the Antibot and that still has found no malware problems yet.

I then followed the instructions to check file locations manually and i didn't see anything suspicious in any locations.

Any ideas on where to go now?

Thanks for your time.

Hi pmiller,

From your description, I keep getting the feeling that your computer may be being re-infected. I am paranoid, I admit it. But there are some threats that can be pretty sneaky and can spread via network shares. This means just connecting to the Internet can cause the threat to infect the computer.

Because of this, it is important that you follow these steps to run a full system scan in Safe mode:

1. Download the latest virus definitions via the Symantec Web site (these definitions are the most current)

Title: 'How to update virus definition files for Norton 2008 product using Intelligent Updater'
Document ID: 2007090100014179
> Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton2008.nsf/docid/2007090100014179

2 Start your Norton program.
3 On the Norton product tab, click Settings,
4 Under Basic Security, click AutoProtect and then click Configure.
5 Check Load Auto-Protect during system startup.
6 Click Apply.
7 In the left pane, click Exclusions.
8 In the left pane, click Low Risk Exclusions.
9 Under "How to respond when a low security risk is found", click Automatically remove low-risk items.

10. Click Apply and then click OK.

11. Unplug your network cable or your wireless modem. You should not be connected to the Web during this process to avoid re-infection via network shares.

12. Restart in Safe mode and run a Full System Scan (not a Quick Scan!!)

12. Restart in Normal. AP will scan on startup.

13. Open your Norton program and run one more Full System Scan.

14. If nothing is detected, plug your network cable back in or start your wireless modem.

This is the full meal deal of scans. If nothing is detected at this point, then you can be confident that all is well. If the symptoms persist you can be very sure that they are not threat related.

Let me know what happens.

Thanks,

Hi Paul,

The text in the scan UI should actually read "Scanning for traces of: SecurityRisk.URLRedir" although there are cases where it may just say "SecurityRisk.URLRedir".  In either respect the Scan is searching in the locations that this threat is known to infect.  It does not mean you are infected with the threat.  The fact that a full scan does not detect SecurityRisk.URLRedir means that the threat is not present on your system.

Here is one thing to try which will hopefully narrow down the cause.  Open the options and go the "Manual Scanning" section.  Disable the following options:

"Turn on KeyLogging Detections"

"Turn on SONAR scan"

"Scan for rootkits and other stealth items"

"Scan for tracking cookies"

Now run the Quick Scan to see if the issue goes away.  Let me know what happens when you try this and we can go from there.

Thanks for your time,

Wes

Hi all, hope someone can help,

I have just installed Norton Internet Security 2008, when i try to run a quick scan it always reaches SecurityRisk.URLRedir and then freezes.

For your info, i am running windows xp and have tried formatting my hard drive and re-installing Norton but it still does the same. I have checked my host file for suspicious entries and there is nothing in there.

I have tried contacting the online help many times for hours on end and achieved nothing.

Hope someone can help!

Regards,

Paul

Have you tried to exclude that file from scanning?
