I recentlly switched from OpenDNS to Norton DNS and I must say, I'm liking Norton DNS a lot more.
Anyway, I have a question about Norton DNS:
If I have a dynamic IP address, do I have to use some sort of DNS Updater in order continue to use Norton DNS?
If I have to use some sort of updater, is it okay to use the OpenDNS updater?
I'm asking this because OpenDNS's website stated that you had to use their DNS updater if you have a dynamic IP address.
I have tried downloading the Norton DNS client but the download link is broken for some reason.
Any help will be appreciated thanks.
PS: I browse the internet using an ethernet connection and a router. I only have Norton DNS set up on my computer and not on my router.
Welcome,
Have you tried this site: http://dns.norton.com I just did and it seems to be up. Now, why only on your computer and not on the router? I would assume that you would want to protect the whole network rather than just your system. But that's your choice.
There is no 'updater' for Norton DNS because the real engine is on a Norton server which is kept updated. The only active part of the solution on your computer is the built in routines which check with DNS. They are maintained by your operating system so get updates via that route.
OpenDNS filtering is based on the registration of your the IP address of your network. Whenever the OpenDNS server receive any traffic from that IP address(es), your web filtering policy is applied. The DNS updater is used to keep the OpenDNS network settings up to date with any changes to your dynamic IP address. A problem would be when your ISP uses a proxy server to present a masked IP address of your network to the internet (good for security reasons). The DNS updater will no longer function as your network IP and your public IP no longer match. Norton DNS uses predefined policies that are applied to all traffic going to select DNS servers based on the addresses you use when configuring your router/pc. Nothing to keep up to date. With Norton DNS, you don't have the individualized settings that you do with the OpenDNS solution, but it is a great global solution for your network to help filter out the internet garbage.
