Norton driver updater tries to update one of my drivers to one that has an earlier number!

Issue abstract:

The driver updater offers to update my one of my drivers to one with an earlier version number

Detailed description:

The driver is: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 Device type: Display

And the screen reports: (note that I have currently “skipped” the update)

Your current version 31.0.101.2115

Skipped version 26.20.100.7262

Product & version number:

Norton Driver Updater

Software version: 25.1 (build 6041)

OS details:

Edition Windows 11 Pro

Version 24H2

OS build 26100.4946

My Device

Processor Intel(R) Core™ i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz (2.81 GHz)

Installed RAM 12.0 GB (11.9 GB usable)

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

What is the error message you are seeing?

There is no “error message” as such. Rather the offer to install an earlier version of a driver seems perverse. Incidentally, the driver that is installed was obtained through the “Intel® Driver & Support Assistant”.

**Which should I trust?
**

I did the same thing you did. Both Norton and Intel Driver & Support Assistant are designed to provide the latest drivers. The newest driver has the highest number. Choose the one with the highest number.

Thank You.

A trawl through this “Ask The Community” will quickly reveal that the driver updater has few fans (That is an understatement). What i find quite amazing in this particular instance is that (to me) the ability to discern which driver is the “latest” seems to be quite in error.

I intend cancel my subscription to the Norton updater.

@SidPlymouth @Terrace As you both have already read here on the forums, we recommend using Windows Updates and/or your OEM websites for updating drivers. Driver Updater has in certain instances, rendered computers not bootable. Use extreme caution if you must use it. My personal recommendation is don’t use it. The risks are too great.

These drivers that “need updating” using Windows of which I trust more than Norton, the drivers are up to date. I did this for my bluetooth drivers Norton was stating were out of date. I have used Norton for years but think this partnership is coming to an end.
