Should I be worried about the stability of the NIS version (21.1.0.18) that's installed on my Windows 8 (upgraded to 8.1) computer, if I keep seeing the following errors reported in NIS's Security History? If I should be worried, then should I uninstall and then reinstall NIS?
Yes. I think that issue may be due to that Operating System upgrade. You sure it's compatible with your system specifications? If you were able to run it smoothly earlier, then I would like to suggest you going with a complete uninstall then restart your computer and re-install the software program.
Thanks. Actually, before upgrading Windows from 8.0 to 8.1, I had consulted Norton's customer service, and they told me that NIS would be compatible with the OS upgrade. Go figure. Also, I have already done an uninstall/reinstall a couple of days ago on this machine, because Norton toolbar didn't appear in Firefox after the initial install. Now, at least I've got Norton toolbar in Firefox. And since I just got this computer a week ago, I decided to install NIS after I did the OS upgrade to 8.1.
Therefore, I wouldn't know if the machine would have run more smoothly on Windows 8.0 than on 8.1.
If I do another uninstall/reinstall, I wonder whether I might get yet a different problem. Question is, if I let things remain as they are, will that put my computer at risk? How serious are these errors anyway?
Hi,Inquirer. Did you uninstall from Programs and Features, or did you use the Norton Removal Tool ?
It's possible some files were corrupted during that process, and it's often best to try the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, which will give you a clean install of your Norton product.
Afterwards, I would enter my existing product key to replace the trial. I wonder if the trial version itself is corrupted. Hmm...
Maybe the Norton people should check the trial version of NIS at the above link to see whether it contains any corrupted files. I think I will uninstall the program again and redownload it from within my Norton Management portal and see what happens. Thanks.
Hi, again. It sounds like you have a corruption somewhere, so I'd suggest you go with the Remove and Reinstall Tool, as that will replace your existing install with a fresh one.
Noticing that currently there's a discount on Norton 360 and at the same time realizing that my NIS subscription was about to expire, I decided to upgrade to 360. And guess what? Security History again reports the same two sets of errors as in the original posting. And, yes, it's Norton 360 this time.
Actually, when I said that I "upgraded" from NIS to Norton 360, I meant that I did it manually. That is, I uninstalled NIS with the Removal Tool first and then downloaded and installed Norton 360 via the link that popped up right after purchasing the licence for it. So I have no idea what is going on. I don't think there's anything wrong with the computer itself--at least, I hope not.
I just wonder how serious these errors are, whether they will put my computer at risk. If the answer is no, then I'll just ignore them.
If it's any consolation, I've got several log entries on N360 exactly as you have in your first post.
I feel that as long as the icon in the Notification area has the green check mark, then all is good. If there is anything seriously wrong with your installation, Norton will let you know.
It took me quite a while before I could relax and stop checking the Security History, but I'm glad I have. There's enough things in life to worry about without being stressed about your Norton installation.
Do the errors in you security history stop if you change your Detailed Error Data Collection to Never and then turn your Norton Community Watch to Off? This will only stop data submissions about potential security risks to Symantec and will not affect your system security if you'd like to test this .
Also, have you noticed if these error messages are generated when you plug in a USB device like a mouse, printer or external drive?

Which is why I suggested the RnR Tool, as it whips out your current instal, and replaces it with a fresh copy of the latest.
Often the best way of fixing a troublesome install. Always an option, if you need it.
Hi, F4E.
You know, I just realized that the RnR Tool that you suggested is different from the tool that I used. The one I used was a removal tool only. So, I'll try the RnR tool now and see what happens. I'll report back tomorrow at the latest. Thanks, again!

Hi, Imacri.
No, I never did any of that. But I think I'll use the RnR tool as suggested by F4E and see what happens. I'll report back tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions.
