Norton Fails to load after windows 8.1 update

Since updating windows to 8.1, Norton fails to load from a cold start. If I restart the PC it will alway start the second time.

I can't access it from the start menu either. clicking on Norton internet security does nothing.

Anyone any ideas how to resolve this? I have the latest version & even uninstalled & re-install Norton once. It still behaves the same way.

After trying to run Norton from the start menu, 10 minutes later I get this message....

Norton Internet Security
21.1.0.18
Error: 8504, 104
Windows 8.1 Pro
9600.16452.amd64fre.winblue_gdr.131030-1505

Hi runwaypimp, and welcome. Those errors indicate a program conflict or file corruption.

Do you or have you had any other real time malware programs running ? There should be two instances of nis.exe running in Task Manager. One for System, and one for user.

The best way to get a fresh install, is to run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool. The link is below

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

any updates on this? On my machine it worked after update to W8.1 till today. Now I see the same exact error. I already did all steps, removed all norton stuff, reinstalled it again - and it helped for some time. Then I turned off my machine, turned it on again - and again have the same error. Any help?

update: nis version 21.1.0.18, there were no any other security stuff on this machine, NIS worked since it has been installed by HP (it went with preinstalled system), I didn't installed any system updates or new applications for about 2 weeks. It just stopped working with no reason

Hi, notacat. Have you tried using the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool as previously suggested, rather than uninstalling via Programs and Features ?

After a possible file corruption, this is usually the best way to ensure a clean install.

yes, I used the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tools. Actually, the only thing which finally helped (at least for now) is changing system performance settings from "optimizing programms" to "optimizing services". And when NIS loaded sucessfully, I changed NIS boot protection to agressive. Cross fingers
