Norton Family blocking local HP Scanner/Printer HP5510

I have an HP 5510 printer and it has a "Scan to PC" option.

As of this week when Norton Family is ON I get the "Site Blocked"  it says I am trying to access HPEC9A7474FA66  Which does not have a .com or .net or any toplevel domain qulaifier. so... I can't enter it into the norton family safe site list. BUT I also can't use the IP address becasue it isn't tyring to reach an IP address it is trying to reach that HPEC97.... name.

When norton family is off... no problem.

Can you tell us what the url looks like when you are trying to access your HP Scanner?

I have added an IP as a website to allow and it appears to function properly.

there is no url there is some system in the background that is trying to reach the scanner.

I just rebooted and it just starts giving the errror message below

Hi jflahiff,

Thanks for the screen shots.  I did a little search on HP Scanner/Printer HP5510 and found the following information on the HP 5510 series manual:

"The IP address for the printer can be found by touching the Wireless button on the control panel or by printing a network configuration page."

Please try to see if that helps.  The link to the HP manual is at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02983578.pdf

Thanks,

Katie

oh and I did add the IP address to the allowed list.

jflahiff,

Can you please also add http://HPEC9A7474FA66:8080/... (I can't see the whole link from the screen shot you sent, but you need to copy the whole link to the allowed list to see what happens.

Thanks

Katie

Nope. tried wihtout the port number.

and without the http://

hpec9a7474fa66:8080/WalkupScan/WalkupScanDestinations

I did successfully put in  as an allowed site   hpec9a7474fa66

But still nothing

jflahiff,

How about http://hpec9a7474fa66?

Thanks

It sounds as if you don't have separate accounts set up for you child vs. the parents on this machine.

Although this would be just a work around, it may satisfy your need.

Create an administrator account that is not monitored by Norton Family and see if you are able to print from there.

oh sorry. I don't mean to say it didn't go onto the list.  it is there. just that it doesn't do anything. Capture.PNG

Not a fan of a seperate account.

Isn't it weird? kinda gets you interested. :-) gotta solve that darn problem.

what the heck can it be?

I understand you are not a fan of separate accounts, it was more for just a quick test to make sure that a non-monitored account works properly.

We usually recommend if this is a comon computer to have different accounts for each user.

Without having that specific device it's hard for us to reproduce.

jflahiff,

Can you please log onto your Norton Family account online and unblock the category of "Uncategorized" at Settings -> Web and SAVE it to see if that helps?

Thanks
Katie

still isn't gonna work.

This thing pops up every 60-75  seconds sits there for 14-15 seconds then fades. literally I have timed it.

When it does. it freezes things. My daughter was running through a power point and it stoped the animantion for the 14-15 seconds.  When I am on facebook and scrolling it freezes the scrolling until it goes away or I click it off.

This is not going to work. Makes using this computer VERY frustrating.

We are looking or alternatives while we try and track down the specific issue. If you could try the steps Katie suggested and report back while we are continuing to work through the issue that would be helpful.

We are not sure if it's part of the category engine, the lower level network or something else, which is why we are asking for different solutions / scenarios. Multiple accounts, changing the web categories etc...

Thanks,

Matt

Hello, I am having this same problem. I have the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer.

Norton Family gives: ... has attempted to visit the following Web site(s) that belong to the block Web site categories: HPE8FB41 - "Uncategorized". http://hpe8fb41:8080/walkupscan/walkupscandestinations.

This thing pops up every 60-75 seconds in the tray, sits there for 14-15 seconds then fades. Like the other poster said: This is not going to work. Makes using this computer VERY frustrating.

Thanks,

Don

When you say you have the same problem are you using a single account? Do you have multiple accounts? Does the non-managed account work properly?

There were some steps that Katie put in above to try and work around the problem, have you tried those?

This issue has just started today, got a HP 7500 printer as well. Every 60 seconds or so getting a new message re Blocked site.

dont want to turn off "un categorised" as that defeats the one of the "catch alls"

Has something changed in recent release ?

I, too am having the same issue with an HP networked printer.  I added the printer's hostname to the allowed web sites, but to no avail.  Only after I un-checked the "uncategorized" option did the messages stop and I could successfully connect to the printer.
This is not a browser issue; the HP setup program installs a program called "HPNETWORKCOMMUNICATORCOM.EXE" which is what appears to be attempting to contact the printer.  It retries every 30 - 60 seconds, so the Norton messages keep appearing, and I keep getting e-mail notifications about them.

Guidance from the community would be appreciated.  I don't want to keep the "uncategorized" option turned off for too long.  Thank you!

Tom
