Norton Family not enforcing curfew time if my child does not log out

Hi,

Norton family does not seem to enforce the curfew time if he does not log out of his account but rather just lock the screen, and then logs back on during the curfew hours. But when he logs out and logs back in during curfew hours, he gets the 60 seconds count down.

I don't think this should be the expected behaviour right? If he locks his account and logs back in during the curfew hours, I see the attached image when I check the remaining time. Basically it says "You have either used up the allowed time ...blah blah..". But the countdown screen does not come up.

Appreciate some response on this. Reason I started using Norton was because Microsoft Family Safety did not work properly as well after I upgraded to Windows 8.1. I am surprised that similar issues are also present for Norton Family!

Hi, I just want to clarify that I am aware of what you have described and it all works if my son signs out of his account after using the computer and when he signs back in, he gets the popup warning. However, if he does not sign out (before or after his time is up), but just locks the Windows account and then logging back in later, the popup does not happen.

Note that difference in scenarios:

1) signing out and signing back in - curfew and time limit enforced

2) locking screen and signing back in - curfew and time limited does not get enforced.

Note that for time management, I am using the option based on active time and not logged in time.

Hi chriseow,

If you have the option "

Count only the amount of time XXX actively uses the computer" selected at Settings -> Time,

Norton Familydoes not include the idle time to calculate the total computer usage time, so he might be able to stay on the PC longer than the time he is allowed  How much longer is he able to stay on the PC, he is not logged out at all?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi, yes, I have selected only the option for active time.

I allocated an hour for him, but I can see him using beyond 2 hours.

In addition, he is using the computer beyond the curfew time pretty consistently.

He does not sign out of his account, but rather lock the screen. And he can sign back in after curfew hour is in force.

Hi chriseow,

You said "...allocated an hour for him, but I can see him using beyond 2 hours..."  in this sample, when it happens, can you please go to the Norton Family icon in system tray and select "View Time Remaining"?  How much time is left?

Thanks

Katie

I have found out that one of my kids has found a way around the time limit issue because of a glitch in the Norton software.  When the warning comes up, the child chooses to ask for more time, and then puts in an incorrect email and password, and then norton pops up with a warning saying incorrect information was entered and asks if it should email the parent letting them know they have asked for a time extension.  The kid clicks ok, then clicks ok on the time extension screen, and viola...the timer goes away.  This can be done at least 10 times, since I sat and watched the kid do it.

In addition, I have specific websites and categories blocked for another child, namely facebook and pornography, but after checking the browsing history, it is chock full of facebook and pornhub.com.  I am completely dumbfounded how Norton could be working this poorly.  I will be looking around for other methods to accomplish what I need, namely trustworthy time constraints and blocking sites that are supposed to be blocked.

Thanks for nothing, Norton.

Hi ckendall_sr,

Thanks for the details.  I tried the steps you described,  and I recieved the message "Parent email or password is incorrect" after adding the wrong email & password, then I clicked OK, but I still get the same message.  I didn't get the message asking if it should email the parent letting them know they have asked for a time extension.  I was not able to get around and stay on the PC.

Please let me know what version of Norton Family you have on the PC, then I will try again.

As for website logs, if a child has administrative rights on the PC, the child is able to create a Windows account and not associate the account with any profiles on the Norton Family online account.   Please check the PC to see there is a windows account that is not associated with any profiles online.

Thanks,

Katie
